D's Story
Music
If you're tired of (ugh) Classic Rock (we've been listening to this crap for 35 years!) then check these two out online:
WFUV dot org - Fordham University in the Bronx' NPR station. Great jocks, no playlists or commercials, great format and good music. Best of the East Coast.
KFOG dot com - West Coast - San Fran's very, very good FM station. Dynamite music, new and old. Both available free for 24 hours.
Life
Hmmm... been there done that. Left Cleveland 1982. Lived in metro DC 8 years; Bmo 2 yrs; San Fran 1 yr; Lakewood 1 more year; NYC 1 yr; Hoboken, NJ 7 yrs. Been doing trade show, event production for 25 years, yikes. Traveled all over US doing shows, a couple of international trips, too.
Ya just gotta love Rio. Brazil, in general, strikes me as a nice place.
Now going on 5 years in scenic formerly industrial strength Youngstown, Ohio as production manager for new (October 2005 we opened) downtown 7,000 seat Chevrolet Centre Arena.
Quickly married and just as quickly divorced, one beautiful daughter Catie (she's 6 as of April 2008) from that relationship. I'm a good dad and as actively involved as I possibly can be given that Cate now lives in Columbus, where Mom moved to on the day before my 2006 birthday, ...Happy Birthday to me.
If I had it all to do over again, I'd have Catie without the marriage (can this be done?) and be living in, um, Hoboken or Rio or San Francisco (but AFTER they have the next Big One...).
Aah, Youngstown, who loves ya?
I've liked and like my job, have met many interesting people wh...Expand for more
ile doing it to wit: In a diner in Montgomery, Alabama the daughter of one of the Little Rascals dancers from the episode where Fattie says, "What ho! Bring on the dancin girls!" and more recently Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers, too. Nice guy, very softspoken. They played here last summer.
I've done many interesting things, too. While in DC it was not uncommon to see our design & production department's work (I managed it) on the network news when I got home at night during the Reagan years.
I am hopefully in a spot where I can make an active and positive difference in a place that needs some optimisim and fun for a change. Youngstown, that is...
School
Yikes.
CSU 72-73: 1.7 GPA accum for the year. Loved shooting pool & smoking pot. My first computer exposure - Fortran IV & stacks of punch cards. My, how we have progressed?
Tri-C 73-74: Didn't change much, maybe went to class more often, 3.8 GPA.
Then the fun began...
Kent State 1974-79: Total of 7 years to get a 4 year degree in... Interior Design??? Yep. People & their environments fascinated (and fascinate) me. Got into event production there, program board - parades, rock concerts and more.
Got out & by chance combined design degree w/ trade show design & production work. Thus a career began.
How I got to where I am makes for good Lakewood front porch conversation fodder.
I miss those wonderful Lakewood front porches, yep. Bigtime. Sidewalks, neighbors. Community!
We who grew up there are very, very lucky to have come from such a strong and sensible place.
