Dale's Story

After College I worked for a year at New England College and ran a co-ed dorm. I then moved to Washington, DC from 1977-June of 1981. I was the manager of an Oriental Rug Store in Old Town Alexandria VA called Alexandria's Rugtime Stand. After four years in retail, I decided the time was right to get out of retail which took up every holiday and weekend. I moved back to Wappingers Falls, enrolled at Pace University to work on my Master's in Computer Science and got a job in administration at IBM Divisional Headquarters to support myself. Once settled, I rented an apartment in Westchester County and lived their from June 1981 through August 1984. While at IBM I pursued a career in the field as a systems engineer. In 1984, I took a job in Los Angeles CA as a systems engineer in the IBM branch office that covered the Aerospace Technology Customers. I did my year long training for selling and supporting and did a one year stint as a systems engineer before moving into straight sales for our large customer set. I have had a really fun careet and have now worked for IBM for 29 + years. I was very lucky in the early 90's to survive all of the layoffs that happened within IBM during the next four to six years. I then became focused on IBM's storage system hardware and had an LA territory that covered many large accounts in the Aerospace, Car Company (Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc) and ADP. I got married in Dec of 1992. At our last reunion I think I had won the prize for having the youngest child in the class. He was born in May 1995. He just entered the 10th grade and I have had many benefits from being an "older" mom. While many of you are entering the fun grandparent years......I need some sympathy as I start to panic that he is anxious to get his driving permit next May. I am only partially stupid in his eyes so I have not lost all of my brains yet. I think being a mom is the most fun job in the world. My work accomplishments pale in comparison. I got divorced last year and have the unfortunate circumstance to pay him alimony so I have to watch my pennies until Daniel gets out of high school. We were able to buy out the house so we did not need to make any changes there. We moved back to CT in 2000. I toold an IBM Storage Specialist job covering Aetna and some of the other Insurance accounts. I wanted to come back East cause my parents, who moved to Enfield CT in 1996 were starting to have physical problems and I could not help them much from CA. So after 16 years in Los Angeles that I loved, we came back to the country.......we live in Sandy Hook, CT which is slighly NE from Danbury. In September of 2002 I had a ruptured intestine. I thought I had food poisoning and did not go to the hospital until the next morning. By then my abdimon was all full of poison, and I was dang lucky that the Dr. on call was a very experienced surgeon. After a long two week hospital stay I went home for another six weeks. I returned to work in December and then in January I had to go back to have another surgery to remove more of the large intestine. Because of that second surgery and testing that I went through, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer in February 2003. I went to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Sloan Kettering would have been fine but were not covered by my health insurance. Dana Farber was fabulous. I had an excellend surgeon and oncologist. I had three tumors removed as well as had a centinel node...Expand for more
biopsy where they only remove the first node of every string under your arm. They biopsy the nodes in the operating room and if any of them have cancer in them they go ahead and remove the whole string of that node. I had two strings that had to be removed. Because the tumors were over 8 centimeters all together I had the pleasure of going through six months of chemo and six weeks of radiation. My last radiation treatment was in January 2004. My dad passed away in February 2004. So as you can see, the first several years of living in CT turned out to be a very stressful time in my life. My mom moved the end of 2004 to the Masonic Independent living facility called Ashlar Village in Wallingford CT. She is much closer to my sister who lives in Kennsigton and much closer to where I work in Hartford. I have a very different outlook on life since my illnesses. Don't waste a day doing anything yoiu don't want or like. If it is broke, fix it or move on. I took Daniel to Alaska for 2 1/5 weeks in August 2006. We did a train tour from Fairbanks to Seward spending several Days in Danli National Park and Talquitna. When we got to Seward we did the Fiords in a smaller boat than the cruise ships so we were able to get within a quarter mile of the calving glaciers. It was awesome to watch. Then we flew to Glacier Bay and did some fun water trips there including a 1/2 day fishing trip to Halibut. We caught our bait (herring) prior to the halibut fishing part. We were mixed in with about 100 humpback whales all eating herring. It was so breathtaking that tears just streamed down my face. It was like being in God's presence. The halibut fishing was a blast. We caught several 30-40 pound halibuts and shipped home about 20 pounds of fish. We gave the rest of what we caught to the couple from CA who were shipping home as much as they could. The next year we went to Canada and went up to the mountain where the Olympics were held last year. Then we took a train from Vancouver to Banff. We then drove north through the Canadian Rockies up to Lake Louise and Jasper. What a ball we had. Daniel got some rod and reel fishing in. We saw a ton of wildlife - dozens of eagles, moose, bear etc. Next summer we are planning to fly in to CO and then head out to Wyoming and Montana to do Jackson Hole, Yellowstone Park and Galcier Nathonal Park. For the last few years, Daniel and I share a piano lesson. He is really good, and I love it but don't have anywhere near the talent. The teacher makes me perform at the recitals just like all her kids.........and I am so intimidated by this I can barley get through my songs. But at home, it is relaxing to me to practice and step away from the corporate nonsense that goes on in today's world. At least if I am every downsized, now that I am over 55 and have 29 years, at least I can retire. I am now a Client Exec for IBM and Aetna is my only account. This is a new role for me at IBM. It is fun to get out of just the HW side and in to the whole solution end to end selling. Hoping that this job will last me through the next 4-5 years which is when I plan on retiring. By then, Daniel will be out of high school and hopefully halfway through college by then. My biggest dream.....I would love to swap houses and go live in Tuscany Italy for a year after retirement. I continue to work on my bucket list. Remember, life is short and when my time is up, I do not want to leave earth with any regrets.
