Dale Pillsbury:

CLASS OF 1960

Dale's Story

I married in 1965 (Holly Baumann, SGHS class of 1963) and have two children; Dana lives in Europe and Leif lives in far west suburbs of Chicagoland. After some false starts, I finally ended up with a PhD in Chemistry in 1973. After a post-doctorate, I worked in the petrochemical industry for 26 years. I spent my time in R&D labs and as a problem solver in manufacturing plants. I retired in a corporate downsizing in 2001. During the course of getting an education and working, we lived in a number of locations: Rochester, NY , Bozeman, MT , Columbus, OH , the far west suburbs of Chicago, Richmond, VA, Dayton, OH (our first wifely work transfer) and in 2007 Chicago (our second wifely work transfer) and upper Wisconsin. I now spend my time on a lake about 20 mile NW of Park Falls in the far northcentral part of Wisconsin. It looks a lot like the Adirondacks, but with more lakes and without the mountains. As noted above, my wife transfered to a job in the Chicago area. She comes north on most weekends (weather permitting) although it is a 6 hour drive one way. However, she really enjoys her job and is willing to do the driving so long as her work is challenging. Living in the Chicago area she now gets more chance to see our son's family. Although I always thought I was a dog person, somehow we now have 3 cats (and no dog). While I'm a pretty good house-hubby, I also do a lot of outside work including gathering 6-8 cords of firewood in what the locals call the Great North Woods. With propane prices as high as they are, we heat solely with firewood. Some day ...Expand for more
when things settle down, I'll get to go fishing, but right now there still are a lot of things to do around the house and property. I still enjoy reading and learning about new technology, especially in chemistry. I also am very interested in history, analog electronics and the enviroment. I read quite a lot of fiction and have very little use for what passes as entertainment on the TV. In fact, I use the TV antenna that came with our home to bring in an NPR station about 60 miles away....everything is a bit further away up here. One of my latest computer projects involves putting a genealogy chart together for one of my grand-daughters and my nephew. My daughter started it all with a very nice family tree when she did a report in middle school. Thanks goodness she did that when all of her grandparents were still alive. Now I need to fill it in with the latest additions and get it in a more permanent, computer file form. My other recent mental effort has been coming up with a new/novel molecular transistor design. I have been thinking about this for years based on some work I did as a post-doctorate at Ohio State. Nanotechnology is all the rage in chemistry now, so perhaps I can get someone in Academia interested in working on it. It is fortunate my wife has an apartment in the Chicago area. Not only do I get to see our grandchildren, I can also go to Northwestern University's library to do research on my molecular transistor ideas. Both the genealogy and the molecular electronics are challenging and it helps to keep my gray matter from atrophying. Take care. Dale
