Dale's Story
Update, September 2013
Had our family reunion on Whidbey Island in August. Shocked by all the growth and urbanization in Oak Harbor. Also attended my brother's (Kent Ubil) class of 1963 picnic at West Beach. It was fun meeting some of my class of 1960 who also attended . . .Betty Ellis (Metts), Bill Mosher.
Couldn't get over the nice cool ocean breezes and sunny beaches and the greenery and forests. Had forgotten about all those things which make up this island paradise in the Pacific Northwest. It was sure a welcome respite from Texas (for my brother's family) and Arizona (for me).
The building where my Dad, Harry Ubil, had his 1950's Delicatessan has been torn down . .why? Just a blank space where it used to be along with several other buildings also torn down. Overall, Oak Harbor has done a pretty good job on the renovation of the historic...Expand for more
downtown with the rerouting of heavy traffic closer to the waterfront. The marina is fantastic! Never had one when I grew up.
My cousin Don no longer lives on the old family farm on Strawberry Point but we all visited it on this trip. It reminded me of that T.V. program "Life After People" on, I believe the History Channel. Trees and bushes overtaking all the buildings and the old log barn . .unique on the island.
Overall a very enjoyable experience topped off with a ferry trip up through the San Juans to Vancouver Island and Victoria, B.C. If anyone has not seen Victoria recently, it is a VERY big city (major west coast city) with a beautiful waterfront
Our visit to Deception Pass was phenomenal! How often do you get a nice sunny day and warm breezes here with
boats of every description, including sail boats, cruising through the pass.
