Dale's Story
Like many, I left town not long after graduation. I joined the Coast Guard in November of 1977 and retired after 27 years in December 2004. Lots of good time being stationed up and down the East Coast between Jacksonville, Fl and NYC. Beach Haven NJ and Ocracoke Island were among the areas I was stationed. One of the positions I held was as an instructor conducting law enforcement, damage control and shipboard firefighting training on units from Maine to Texas, The Great Lakes and the Caribbean. One particular trip made was to Guinea and Guinea-Bassau on the west coast of Africa to conduct fisheries enforcement training. It was interesting that the vessels that these countries were using were from the U.S , Russia(Soviet Union), and Communist China. You see this trip took place in the Mid 1980's so the world powers were doing what they could to sway your direction politically.
I was stationed in NYC from August 1984 until 1998. I met my wife, Teri, while stationed there and both our sons, DJ (31) and Drew (29) were born there.
We transferred to Hampton Roads in 1998 and I finished up in 2004 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer.
I attended college two semesters in 05, attended Chesapeake Police Academy for six weeks, but a knee injury put me out, so it was back to college until graduation in August 2007.
I worked in Facilities Management at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center from September 2007 until November 2018. I went from starting out as a floor mechanic and worked my way up to the Director of the department.
Starting January 2019 I began a new position at UF Health in Jacksonville, Florida. As a Life Safety Spec...Expand for more
ialist I conductied environment of care inspections and fire drills at the hospital and outlying units.
My wife, Teri, retired in June 2019 from Chesapeake Public Schools. She joined me in Jacksonville in June after the house in Chesapeake sold. She is not one to hang around with nothing to do, so I suspect she'll be looking for work of some sort soon.
The middle of September 2019 we moved to a new home in Nocatee (Ponte Vedra), Florida. Teri began working with preschoolers in St. Augustine as part of a grant program. Like I said, she has to stay busy and she did stay busy until...2020...COVID...enough said. We made it through and got vaccinated in January of 2021.
During the COVID year it was decided that we would pull up stakes and head to Ft Myers. Teri has family there and the past year showed how important it is to have family nearby. So, we're hitting the reset button again.
In July 2021 we closed on a house near Ft. Meyers, left UF Health, sold our house in Ponte Vedra (very good investment), and made the move the end of the month. Who knows, I may actually stay retired this time.
My wife and I attended 45th reunion held during September 2022. Really great to see and catch up with so many classmates.
We endured hurricaine Ian the end of September 2022 with no flooding and minimal wind damage. Coastal area didn't fare well and will take years to recover.
The boys, DJ and Drew are doing well. Drew works in a lab at Life Net in Virginia Beach. DJ and his wife Tali live in Blacksburg, VA where she graduated from Virginia Tech 2020. DJ works as a Supply Analyst at a distribution center for Moog in Blacksburg.
