Dale's Story

My story was written in 2016. I am editing it today on June 3rd 2018. I graduated from Jamestown College and have been in education ever since. I taught math in Jamestown, ND (1978), Bemidji, MN (79-83), and finally in Anchorage, AK (since 1983). After 13 years of teaching in Anchorage, I became a high school assistant principal for a number of years and then five years as a middle school principal. I retired in 2005 but that was very short lived, two months later I had a new job. I wasn't looking for a job but it has turned out to be a ton of fun. I began working in the Professional Development Department for the Anchorage School District and am still there. I work mainly with new principals and with teachers wanting to become principals. Edit...I retired from ASD in June of 2017. I love the outdoors and am a hunting and fishing junky! Even though we live in Anchorage, we have moose and bear walking through our yard often. Anchorage has mile after mile of great x-country ski trails in the winter and biking trails the rest of the year. It is a beautiful state with lots of great things to see and do. I've been living a dream. I married while in college to Deb, a woman who (40 years later...now 42 years) is still putting up with me. We have been blessed with three wonderful children, Nate, Bridgette, and Brett. All are living in Anchorage at this time. Bridgette is the head of HR for a large pharmaceutical company in Anchorage. She married a Marine named Noah. As an ex-marine he contracted out as a bomb dog handler in foreign countries for private companies. Noah died this summer (2016) racing with a team of Ex-pats in the Baja 500 while raising money for soldiers with PTSD. It was 128 degrees that day a...Expand for more
nd heat exhaustion took his life 20 miles before he finished his leg of the race. He is missed. Nate, our oldest is teaching math at Dimond HS (his Alma Mater) and coaches, X-country Running, XC Skiing, and Track. Brett (the youngest) has been accepted into med school at the U of Colorado in Denver and started classes August 2014. Brett just graduated (May 2018) and will start his residency in Rochester, NY. We have no grand-kids but we do have one grand-dog as of Sept 2016. He lived a long and good life and passes away in 2018. So no dogs or grand kids as of 2018. We own a lake home in the NE corner of South Dakota where Deb grew up. It is between Britton and Sissiton, South Dakota and about three hours from Crookston. The lake is beautiful and I love spending summers there. We spend more time there since retiring to help Deb's mother care for Deb's dad who is in late stage dementia. The lake home is relaxing and a great place for friends and family to rendezvous. Please come and visit some time. It would be fun to catch up. In 2018 we will be building a two car garage with a woodworking shop and then in 2019 we will be gutting the lake house and make a total change to it,.electric, plumbing, heating, and additions. It is going to take me some time to get it done, but I enjoy putzing and working with my hands. Our time is now split between Anchorage and South Dakota because of family needs but both locations are awesome and fun connecting with friends and family in both places regularly. I have been blessed with a great family, good friends, a fulfilling career, and a life of great experiences. In retirement, I still look forward to tomorrow!! The only difference is everyday is now a Saturday:-) Dale
