Dallie's Story
Life
Life does take turns. After 14 yrs. studying for a career in medicine, I practiced only 9 yrs. before being sidelined by a brain tumor. Ironically, I'm married to a neurosurgeon, 23.5 yrs. now. All things happen for a reason though and my silver lining has been the time I've had to devote to our 3 children, ages 21, 19 and 17. Wouldn't trade that for anything now...If only I could remember stuff! The kids are great tho', the oldest a senior Mechanical Engineering/Business major, the middle one a college freshman Art major and the youngest, well, a senior HS teenage girl who can't decide what she wants to do!
School
After my 1st 6 yrs. of school overseas, it was great to settle down at MA. My yrs. there were fun, productive and yes, educational. I enjoyed being in a small school and think of it fondly. Wish I had kept up with friends more over the yrs; had great relationships back then.
College
Although I took a winding road through college, my final goal never changed. From those first (and relatively few) days at Southern, through the year and a half at VSCC and finally my last 2 years at ETSU, I knew that me...Expand for more
dical school was where I was headed. If I had it to do over again, I probably would pay less attention to my heartstrings and more attention to educational strategy (I would pick one college and stay there) but then again, I got a varied look at higher education!
Workplace
After 2 1/2 yrs. in OBGYN, marriage moved me to Memphis & Anesthesia. After 4 yrs. in Pediatric Anesthesia (2 as a fellow and 2 as staff while my husband finished his residency), I was able to concentrate on OB Anesthesia for 8 yrs. while I owned and ran the Anesthesia Dept. at one of our local hospitals. Brain surgery and complications forced me to give up my practice but since then I've enjoyed being with our 3 kids, in spite of a bad memory :-)
Now that they're growing up and going away to college, I'm also having fun with computers, being "tech support" at my husband's private practice. He started a solo practice in neurosurgery/spine surgery in 2006 and we decided to run an all electronic office using Macs. It's worked beautifully with me as the resident if un-reliable :-0 IT person. I do keep a recliner in the IT office for my daily naps!
