Damaso's Story
My name is Damaso Cabrera. While at John Jay H.S. (1956-60) I belonged to the Pan American Club under Mrs. Catherine Burns, Spanish Teacher. I played saxophone in the Senior Band under the direction of Mr. Coleman. Right after graduation in 1960, I joined the U. S. Air Force and served in active duty until 1972. Served in various military installations throughout the U. S. and overseas in Panama, Italy and Puerto Rico. After 12 years of active duty transferred to the Puerto Rico Air National Guard and served for an additional 18 years, completing a military career totalling 30 years. Degree in English and Education. Began working for Digital Equipment Corporation and worked for that Company for 18 years, retiring in 1993. Immediately started working for another company, Bristol-Myers Squibb. Worked in both Companies as a Human Resources Manager, in charge of Compensation and Employee Benefits Administration. In year 2000, retired from BMS and worked for another 2 years for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. After terminating employment with this agency, I finally decided to retire. I now spend most of the time visiting my son in Rochester, NY; another son in Cadiz, Spain and the rest of the time in Puerto Rico. Do a lot of travelling, reading and doing volunteer church work.
