Damon's Story

After high school I enlisted in the Army basic at Fort Sill, OK tour in Germany. The military and I were not a good fit and we parted ways with mutual gratitude. I then became a travel agent and worked for the Breckenridge Chamber of commerce in Breckenridge, CO then worked and lived in Boulder and Denver for a few years before leaving that career. I came home to MSP and worked w/ my family doing property rehabilitation, remodeling, and other general contracting. After becoming a bit to heavily involved in the drug scene the family work thing fell apart and I ended up homeless. I somehow scored a job with the perk of an apartment (no doubt I was high when I interviewed) and straightened myself out while doing maintenance at Laurel Village, a large downtown arartment complex in MSP. I then got married purchased two houses and had two little boys and rehabilitated both of those houses as my primary job. Our property values tripled and my wife and I were both ready for a change of scenery so we sold both houses and bought a boat in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We spent a year or so sailing the east coast and ended up in Charleston, SC. I was accepted into the BSN (nursing) program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.96 GPA, was inducted into...Expand for more
Sigma Theta Tau the international honor society for nurses, took part in the Presidential Scholars program, and received numerous academic scholarships. I worked at MUSC for 5 years with surgical and trauma, neuro, and medical patients finishing my employment there in the Medical ICU. During that time I rehabbed a southern charmer and sold the boat. We sold the house in Charleston and moved West to Bend, OR where we’ve been living since 2013. I started working at St Charles hospital as an ICU RN then became a supervisor for the ICU and Intermediate Care Unit, then took a job as House Supervisor before coming back to the bedside as a Rapid Response RN. I’ve since taken a position that our hospital calls a Hemodynamics RN. My team of four are attached to the Trauma and Cardio-Thorcic teams where we assist with full trauma activations and open heart surgeries. One of the anesthesiologists likes to say that we’re the Navy Seals of Nursing. In my free time I mountain bike, hunt, ski and snowboard. I’ve also been a member of the National Ski Patrol for several years now having patrolled the Mt Bachelor Alpine and Nordic system as a snowboarder, alpine and nordic skier. And, of course, I stay busy rehabbing and remodeling my current home (I just can’t seem to put down the tools completely).
