Dan's Story

Life Hello fellow classmates, I was not Mr. popular in school nor was I an academic. After school I went to work at odd jobs with no direction in my life. In 1986 I got job at The Orthodontist in the Woodhaven mall. I am very good at crafting with my hands and I became a full time lab technician responsible for constructing all of the retainers and other appliances. I eventually opened my own part time business. I bought my first home in 1988 and set up a lab in the garage! I met my wife, Gina, at church. She was from Barbados and was living with family while attending art college. We married in 1989, lived at our home for one year and then decided to move to Barbados! I decided to take up photography as a professional career.(my wife studied photography and was planning on working in Barbados. I loved photography as a hobby). Gina showed me what she knew, I read a few books, and the rest is history! I have been one of the top advertising photographers on the island for the past 16 years! I included some photos I have done over the years in my album. In 1993 my son Dominic was born. We recently both decided to learn the guitar and I occasionally play with our prayer group. My mother also moved to Barbados as well. She volunteers at a small church office and is very happy. A few years back I learned the craft of mold making. My wife's aunt designed beautiful "shell" mirror frames. (she made one for John Cleese as well as many other celebrities) Together we decided to mold and mass produce a range of shell products including small picture frames, mirror frames and candle holders. Last year I started a side business marketing and selling building products for a local manufacture. I photographed samples of their work and constructed a web site. It is different from anything I've done in the past, but it is exiting to make a sale! I am enjoying my life and my family and I look forwar...Expand for more
d to a great future! Thoughts about school; I want to do it all over again, not because it was so much fun, instead because it was four years of my life and memories that I can't change but wish I could! I would make an effort to get to know more people and become involved with group activities. I should of made the most of my years there! Of course I did have many good times as well, and that is what I like to remember. No question, high school was not easy, least of all for the academic stuff! For someone who lacks confidence, or who is not as mature, or is just not very "cool", it can be lonely time indeed. It turns out that high school is short chapter in a very long life and that some of the designated "nerds and losers" that are looked down upon there will eventually make something wonderful out of their lives. I should know. Highlights (as well as trivial, yet mildly entertaining events) of my life include: -Making Terry Bradshaw wait to be seated at his table at Joseph's Restaurant because I wasn't finished photographing it yet. Traveling to Paraguay with my church and rebuilding a church that was destroyed by a storm. Photographing and meeting Prince Edward. Hanging out of a helicopter with the door off to take aerial shots of real estate, and scenery (too many times to count). Hanging out of an old single engine airplane to photograph a remote eco-tourism resort in the jungles of Guyana. Appearing as extras on an episode of "The Bold and the Beautiful" when that show shot here on location. Landing the biggest advertising job of my career. The new Mount Gay rum ads that appear worldwide. Photographing a 6 1/2 karat flawless diamond on a necklace worth one million dollars. Hosting a Christian based youth group of 30 teens that meets at our home. Meeting British Prime Minister Tony Blaire at his vacation home! God has blessed me! Thanks for taking the time, Dan.
