Dan's Story

Life Hey, Grenadiers! It's Dan (or Buddy to my oldest friends). After HS I went to college in Tampa, then 4 yrs in the Navy. I have four sons, Greg 40, Brian 39 and twin 17 yr olds, Dalton and Daniel. The twins and I live in Augusta, GA. I'm a single Dad (Whew!!). I WAS married 3 times. I have 17 yrs in restaurant management for Dunderbak's, Chi-Chi's, Olive Garden, King George Pub, Bertucci's, Cracker Barrel and now, I'm a manager with Ryan's Steakhouse. I'd like to hear from anyone that remembers me. So,what are you waiting for?? Dusty (that's flashes of white) brown hair, green eyes, 175#, 5'9" witty to silly. Write when you can. I'd love to hear from you! Dan School I can't believe my first entry was lost!! Oh, well .. TEACHERS! Wilmouth (Mr and Mrs), Braddy(8th/History-most inspiring), Sawtell (8th/Science), Cone(creative writing), Beutlich(shop), Reigel(12th/Eng.[most embarrassing moment]), Bryant (Span/12th[other most embarrassing]), Story(taught me to read Reader's Digest), Sasser(didn't have him, but the rumors were 'choice'), Miles, Harman, all left me memories! CRUSHES! I came to Colonial with Bonnie Linderman anchoring my heartstrings and left loving Karen D'Ercole, who remains. I still have notes she left with me when we broke up. MOST EMBARRASSING! .. Mr. Bryant(Span.)confiscated a note for Linda and read it in his slow, sarcastic way in front of the class. I got tears in my eyes(!)MORTIFIED!! Poor Linda was ROSY red! My most horrifying memory was when Jack Anderson, Donna Wimbish's ex at the time, was beating the crap out of a guy that was paying attention to her. Who remembers THAT DAY? College In college, I had two roommates. We lived in a huge house (on a main drag) that was blocked off into three apartments. We lived in the LARGEST apartment with a fireplace we couldn't use, but it looked great. Originally, I lived in the smallest, in the rear. It was a bedroom, with a bath. I brought in a hot plate and bought a small frig. It was cozy! Mary Reardon, big crush, had to sit on the edge of the bed to watch TV on our first date. After my friends decided to share the big apt. when it was open, we used to go across the street to an all-night pool parlor. We'd play til 6 AM and then, try to go to classes. Sometimes we didn't make it. I joined a fraternity, Rho Kappa Sigma, and we had parties. That's a great feeling in college. Tampa was cool, because the beach was right there. I loved the water. I miss the ocean here in Augusta. We only have a huge lake that borders both GA and SC. It's packed in the warm months. Remember going to New Symrna and Cocoa beach? Gasparilla Day in Jan/Feb was fun in Tampa! It's a lot like Mardi Gras. But, not as "revealing". There's a big parade and beads are tossed at the bystanders. The theme is Piracy .. celebrating Jose Garpar's capture of the city of Tampa in like 1700 something. I tasted my first lobster in Tampa. We sprung for a fine dining experience once, but most of the time we'd walk two streets over to a little Italian buffet and gorge ourselves on some tomato/pasta dish with hamburger and the best bread ever! When it was gone, it was gone, so we raced after our last class. It was very popular with the rest of the students too. It wasn't 'our secret'. Military The year was 1969. I had completed two years of college in Tampa and,...Expand for more
following my life plan, it was time to enter the service. I had to negotiate my hitch in the Navy. The Army very nearly drafted me. After my first visit to the Navy recruiter, I was informed the Army had been looking for me. My Dad and recruiter had to speak up for me to ensure that I enlisted in the service I had already decided to join. I did Boot Camp in Orlando, during which my mother passed; A terrible blow! I was sent to Maryland for Radio School and Little Creek, Va. became my home port for my entire enlistment. I made 5 cruises to the Caribbean in the Amphibious Navy. I was a radioman for BeachMaster Unit 2. BM Unit ONE was deployed from the west coast to serve in Viet Nam. I was very fortunate. While in service, I was divorced and remarried. I fathered a son in each marriage. Greg and Brian are 40 and 39, respectively, each having their own children; 1 girl and 4 boys, between them. The name lives on!! My wives were Diane Lay and Patty Bates. Diane went to Boone High and Patty graduated Colonial in 1967. Patty remarried, had a second son and lives in Merritt Island. My deployments allowed me to visit very underprivileged countries. Cuba, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba (my favorite and most beautiful port of call), Panama, Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. I used my H.S. Spanish and was amazed at how well it got me around. Some of the ports listed here were visited more than once. The greatest activities were sightseeing and eating the local favorites. Many Spanish dishes, mostly, but there was always a Chinese restaurant, wherever we went. The Caribbean, at the time, held a lot of resentment for the US. It was ALL political. The peoples, for the most part, were generous and friendly. Of course, we brought money to the economy. Coca Cola and flavored drinks (i.e.Orange)are very sweet; much sweeter than their stateside counterparts. The national drink of Puerto Rico is Pina Colada and Rum is the liquer of choice (Barcardi is based in P.R.). I declined "Monkey on a stick", which is sold like hot dogs on the street corners. I hear it's very stringy. YUCK! We wore 'DRESS BLUES' on liberty and marine FATIGUES when we landed on the beach. This meant we had to maintain TWO separate seabags. It always took a couple days to gain your 'sea legs'and the same to gain your 'land legs'. That's why sailors swagger on shore leave. At times, it IS the local brewski's, though. I did bring home souvenirs, but nothing monumental. Our liquor ration was a gallon (or five fifths), so many of us DID bring THAT home to enjoy or sell stateside. Memories of military service stay with you. The shipmates, adventures, ports and the women are retrieved and polished off with every encounter of another veteran. The sights, sounds and smells, the tastes of local cousines .. the giant land crabs of Isabella Segunda~! HOLY MOLEY!! that's a small island, just off Puerto Rico and it's used for military exercises by the U.S. As I said, write when you can. Dan (Buddy) Demorest (EDIT) I wrote that (above) four years ago. This passed November, I reconnected with Beverly Sinclair, someone I dated as a friend and never forgot. Getting together with her, after 40 years, has been remarkable. By the way, for HER SAKE, does anyone know what happened to Jack Fidelle? He was her prom date in '66. THANKS, GUYS!
