Dan's Story

Life I had a very successful 6 year hitch in the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school. I was able to see many beautiful countries(Scotland,Crete,Greece), and some nasty ones.(Egypt) I work at Michigan State University (going on 11 years) as a Power Plant Mechanic. All that Navy training paid off. I spend alot of time watching and participating in various sporting activities and I enjoy traveling as much as I can.(as evidenced by all of my unfinished home projects) Nothing better than the sun, sand, a cold drink and bikinis!! Life is good. I was married for a couple years but am now enjoying the single life.....again. Words to live by......Keep your friends close and your enemies closer!! Hit it hard!! School I still cannot lose the label of Class Clown. Some things stick with you forever I guess. Workplace After my six year enlistment in the U.S. Navy I moved back to Michigan. I worked at Michigan South Central Power Agency in Litchfield for about 10 months. I then took a position at Michigan State University's T.B. Simon Power Plant. I have worked there since and am a Power Plant Mechanic. It is a hot and dirty job but I guess somebody has to keep the lights on so the students can find their beers. When Hugh Hefner finally retires or buys the farm I will be applying for his job. Wish me luck!! Military Left for Navy boot camp in August of '87. The 2 months I spent in Orlando, Florida for boot camp were the longest 2 month...Expand for more
s of my life. It definitely made me grow up in a hurry. I spent the next 8 months in Great Lakes, Illinois for schooling/training. First ship was the USS Detroit (AOE-4) stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. It is a fast combat support ship. Basically a floating 7-11. Gas, food, and bombs. Left the Dirty-D just before Operation Desert Shield and attended a 4 month school at Naval Training Center, Norfolk for advanced main propulsion maintenance. Came home on leave and broke my elbow playing football. Missed deployment for Operation Desert Storm aboard the USS Vulcan (AR-5) so I could go through physical therapy. Was sent to SIMA at Little Creek Amphibious Base were I worked on the valve barge. After my booboo was healed I was assigned to the USS Kalamazoo (AOR-6) in Norfolk. Another floating 7-11 (beans and bullets). I finished me enlistment onboard working in the engine room. I was honorably discharged in August of 93. I was fortunate and had a very successful enlistment in the Navy. I was promoted to Machinist Mate Petty Officer First Class (E-6) a year before I got out. I learned alot from the Navy, not just about my job but about life too. I was able to travel to many different countries and experience many unique cultures, more than most people will ever experience. I also made many great friends that I am still in contact with today after 11 years. I do not regret joining the military at all and would do it all over again in a heart beat if I had to.
