Dan's Story
Life
I was unsure of the direction to follow after graduation, so while riding across town with Buzz Feilly, I asked what he was planning. He told me that he was going over to SJCC. He said, "I can get a 2S diferment by taking some classes." We went over together and signed up. 12 credits cost 79$. That was easy to pay because I was a clerk at the local Lucky Stores and earning $4.10 and hour. I had more money than I knew what to do with.
The 2S differment worked for a while. Vietnam was in full swing and they were drafting friends all around me. I was always more interested in social life at school then going to class or doing home work. Eventually, the draft caught up with me and I enter the US Army on July 15, 1970. It was just like the movies, with innercity tough guys, growling drill sergeants and lonelyness. But, soon adjusted. In fact, the Army was kind enough to draft my best friend from Mt. Pleasant Tom Gatewood. The DI took one look at him and put him in charge. That was great because Tom made up the duty roster and I never got KP. (wasing dishess and pealing potates.) ot far from Ft. Lewis Washington, where we took basic. So every weekend we went AWOL for 24 hours.
One day, the DI (drill instructor) was so angry with our company, that he canceled our company's weekend passes. Tom and I talked an "acting" E5 into taking about 20 of us to the NCO's club. We got blasted on 3.2 beer. The DI found out and made a scene in the club. He was a strong voiced, African-American, career sholdier, that did not apreciate this rabble's tarnish on his Army record. Using some interesting explitives, he called us all into formation outside the club and marched us back to the barics.
We were all feeling the beer and someone broke into cadence song, using the Country Joe and the Fish anti war theme, "One, two, three, four, what are we fighting for? I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam." We all joined in with great enthusiasm and by the time we got to our quarters we had attracted quite a crowd and recieved much laughter and cheers.
The DI scowled the whole way back, then held us at attention for 45 minutes. Following that he had us scrubing the quaters until midnight.
