Daniel's Story

Life What a long, strange trip it's been... I spent most of the 80's and 90's in Alaska. I have sailed all over the world and now have finally settled down to live just outside of Seattle. Married in 1984, son Tristan and step-son Jason who was 12 at the time. Jason made me a grandfather at 35!! In 1996 I was divorced and went back to sea. I received the invitation to the 20th reunion the day after it happened. Sometimes my mail has a hard time catching up with me... After getting out of the military I sailed as the Master of a variety of different vessels from tugs and research vessels to cruise ships. I was appointed by the Governor of Alaska to run the state's Marine Pilot Board, responsible for the safety of foreign flagged shipping and marine commerce. During those years working for the State of Alaska I learned to fly airplanes and buzzed around the mountains and glaciers of coastal Alaska. After resigning from the Board of Marine Pilots in 1996, I studied and sat for a license as an Unlimited Federal Ship Pilot for all of Southeast Alaska. Then I again went to sea sailing as the Master of Research Vessels and Expedition Mega-yachts toting the "rich and famous" around the world. I did this for a few years until 2001. After 9/11, I was sucked back into the military as an "Emergency Essential" logistics planner (long story...). I was assigned to a Joint Forces Deployment Support "Tiger Team" and saw the world again. The idea was that we could be dropped with all our gear anywhere in the world 96 hours after the initial phone call. That was the idea anyway... What an ex-Coast Gua...Expand for more
rd navigator and Mega-Yacht Captain was doing in desert fatigues and traveling with the Army was at times beyond comprehension. After a time slogging through the muddy, bug infested jungles of Nicaragua and then surviving sandstorms in the deserts of the Middle East during the run up to and "major hostilities" portion of the war in Iraq, it was time to make good my second escape from Uncle Sam. I successfully departed government service again in 2004. I have not looked back!! All in all, the bizarre adventure of 2001 to 2004 was a life changing experience. One afternoon, while sitting hunched down in a bunker with my gas mask, the temperature outside 140 degrees in the shade, I finally figured out what life was all about. Upon returning to the US from the Middle East, I asked the lovely and talented Michelle, the woman who stood by me while all that craziness was going on to marry me. We have made our home on the banks of the South Fork of the Snoqualmie River in North Bend, WA. I am now sailing for the Washington State Ferry system, running the largest double-ended ferries in the world (460ft, 200+ cars and 2500 passengers). I get to drive big ships and also get to sleep in my own bed most nights. The best of both worlds. It is good to be home... Fly fishing and kayaking the rapids on the river just outside our door, good food, a bottle of decent wine, a fire on the deck and a soak in the wood fired hot tub before bed. Life is pretty good out here. Come visit. On April 11, 2008, I became an Irish Citizen. Having dual citizenship is pretty cool when you are in the maritime industry.
