Dan's Story
Life
My life has turned out better than I expected. I took an early-retirement package from the San Francisco International Airport in March 2010 and accepted a full-ride scholarship at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, QLD (Australia), whereupon I earned a PhD in Transportation Planning in 2013. I graduated with a BA from the University of California, Davis (1980) and a MUP from San Jose State University (1985). I am a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and was selected to be included in Who's Who in America in 2001 for my professional endeavors. I also served as Chair of the Airports Committee of the American Planning Association - Transportation Planning Division which gave me the opportunity to write articles and speak before professional audiences all over the globe. I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel through much of the world and enjoy my time away from my professional life.
Got married in August 2003 to my wife Donna. We currently live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 9 months out of the year...with our US home in Kansas City, Missouri (although we travel extensively across the globe for most of the summer season due to US tax laws).
School
I was just an ordinary high school student trying to learn sufficiently about things to move on to college and a career somewhere. Probably was a bit bored with the pace of high school but lucked out in being able to attend City College of San Francisco during my junior and senior years and making the Dean's List at 16 even before graduating from high school.
College
Attended the University of California, Davis after high school. It helped that I had units transferred from City College of San Francisco that I earned in high school so that I graduated about a year early. Went to law school at the University of Puget Sound but dropped out after year #2 as I discovered I didn't want to be an attorney. Went on to San Jose State University and got my Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and have been employed as a transportation planner until my early retirement from the City and County of San Francisco in March 2010. I then went on to Queensland Univer...Expand for more
sity of Technology in Brisbane, Australia on a full-ride scholarship leading to the award of my doctorate (PhD) in August 2013. I was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Aviation with the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri. I became an Assistant Professor with Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia lecturing in aviation management subjects. Later, I was a Department Chair and Associate Professor of Transport Studies programs at Modern College of Business and Science in Muscat, Oman for 2 years. I returned to Prince Sultan University last year as an Associate Professor in Aviation Management and am currently the Aviation Management Program Leader.
Workplace
Except for a six-month stint as a transportation planner with Seattle Metro Transit under a special program, I've been with the City and County of San Francisco at both MUNI Railway and SFO until my early retirement in March 2010. I had been a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners but am still a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. I have also served on the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Land Use Compatibility Planning Committee, co-wrote a chapter on airport planning in a book titled "Planning and Urban Design Standards" being published in the Spring of 2005 by J.W. Wiley and Sons, and served on a panel for the Transportation Research Board's Airport Cooperative Research Program. I served a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Central Missouri teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in airport management, planning and design. I am now an Associate Professor of Aviation Management at Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia...and I still contribute by way of articles to the advancement of airport planning around the world, and a regular speaker at aviation conferences worldwide. I am a member of the American Association of Airport Executives' Academic Affairs Committee, and the Transportation Research Board's AV050 Standing Committee on Airport Terminals and Ground Access. I hope to retire in the next year or so and begin another adventure somewhere else in the world.
