Dan's Story
Life
Let me bring you up to date on what has happened to us since I left Tech in 1972. Patti and I were married before I graduated (we married in 70). We are still very happily married and have two girls, Jennifer-31 and Sarah-28. While still at Tech, you might remember that we had the draft lottery on TV. I was fortunate enough to be #3 in the lottery and joined the Navy after graduation. Who would have thought that 26 years later that I would be retiring after a very exciting and rewarding career in the Navy? I went off to Pensacola, FL for flight training and began flying carrier-based aircraft (C-2 cargo and E-2 airborne early warning). After Pensacola, we went to Corpus Christi where I went through advanced training for multi-engine aircraft. While there, we found out that Patti was pregnant. We went from there to Norfolk, VA for training in the aircraft I was to eventually fly. While we were in Norfolk, VA for training, Patti blessed us with Jennifer. She had her in the NavyÂs oldest hospital in Portsmouth, VA. After delivery, she was in the glassed in porch of the hospital. It was a lovely place! Patti and I first went overseas to Naples, Italy and spent 2 ½ years there before coming back to the US. We had a wonderful time in Europe and got to see a lot of beautiful places. We came back to the US and were stationed in San Diego, CA for most of the next 18 years. I was an instructor in San Diego for the E-2 which was very similar to what I flew overseas. After that, I went to a squadron and did a cruise on the USS Constellation for just about 7 months. That was very difficult being away from Patti, Jenni and Sarah who joined us soon after we got to San Diego. We spent the next 1-½ years Monterey, CA where I went to the NavyÂs postgraduate school. Following that, we returned to San Diego and our home which we had rented out while we were gone and I joined the same squadron that I was in before we went to Monterey (I already had t...Expand for more
he coffee cup and T-shirt, so I might as well go back to the same place). After that, I was assigned to the controlling air wing as the maintenance officer for all of the Pacific coast E-2Âs. I continued to fly and was selected to be the commanding officer of a squadron flying off of the USS Nimitz in Bremerton, WA. We still lived in San Diego, because the squadron was based there and only flew to the ship while she was out off the coast of CA. Following that tour, I was assigned to the carrier as the Operations Officer and we almost moved to Bremerton, except our house in San Diego fell out of escrow at the last minute. We decided that it was best to leave the family there and I went to Bremerton by myself. It worked out pretty well, since I left to go on deployment a few months later anyway. After that tour, we joined up again as a family and moved to Washington, DC for what was to become my last tour of duty. I worked for the NavyÂs International Programs Office where we sold excess military equipment to our friendly allies overseas. I was in charge of Latin America, Africa, and the Near East. I got to go to a few interesting places in each one of those areas. Patti got to go along (at our expense-no free rides) to Germany and to Santiago, Chile while I was there on business.
After 26 years, we decided that it was time to call it quits with the navy and return to our family. In all the time that I was in the navy, we rarely spent much time with our families. PattiÂs mother passed away about 8 years ago and her father retired shortly before that. My mother lived in Midland until she passed away in 2004 and my father lives in Corsicana. We decided that 1) we were NOT going to live in west Texas and 2) we could not live in any town that one of the family lived in because we would make someone else mad so we picked Austin off the map as a nice middle ground for the family and a place that I probably could get a job following retirement.
