Dana's Story

After graduating from high school I spent a couple of years at the University of South Dakota (USD) in Vermilion. I dropped out of college to work at a progressive rock and roll radio station in Yankton S.D.(best job of my life...) and then worked up and down the radio dial at several other small market radio stations in the late 1970s and early 80's. In 1982, I went to work for IBP in Storm Lake and then spent the next 15 or so years working in the meat industry first as a production worker boning hams and loins and then as a supervisor, superintendent, plant operations manager and eventually I became the corporate operations specialist for Farmland Foods. Along the way I worked and lived in Dubuque IA and St. Joseph MO before ending up in Omaha. While at Farmland I took advantage of their generous college tuition reimbursement benefit and resumed my college career by starting over from scratch.I eventually received my bachelors degree in history from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and then went on to earn a post graduate Master of Arts in History degree from UNO. I worked part time while an undergrad at UNO at both the college radio station and as a quality control consultant/specialist for slaughter and processing operations for several large organic beef producers. In 1994, I married one of my close childhood friends from Sac City, Rosie O'Connor, and shortly thereafter she joined me as a professional student. Recently, Rosie graduated with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Dr. Rose works at UNMC ...Expand for more
helping to improve the lives of older people by instituting a process to quickly identify and then mitigate the onset of delirium, or prevent the onset of delirium altogether, at the bedside of older hospitalized patients. I am very proud of her. She is making a big difference in the quality of life for a lot of older people. There are actually two doctors in our immediate family now as Rosie's youngest daughter (my stepdaughter) Katie is now in her third year of residency as a physician working at a hospital in Des Moines. Today I work as the Station Manager and Program Director for KVNO-FM, the universities noncommercial classical music radio station in Omaha. I also host a daily classical music program of my own from 9:00 am to noon on KVNO. I started working at KVNO part time on the weekends as an undergraduate and eventually took on a full time role after retiring from the meat industry for good. I just turned 60 last March and Rosie and I are thinking seriously about eventually building a cabin on the lake in Lake View and retiring there. I would like to write and teach history part time at a community college once I retire and Rosie just wants to garden and relax for a change when she retires. I want to learn how to fly-fish and then travel to some of those amazing and beautiful rivers and trout streams all across the country. At least that's the plan right now, but I have learned one very important lesson in life and that is life has a strange habit of taking you to places you never dreamed of. All you have to do is hold on tight and never, never, never give up.
