Dana's Story

Life After graduating from UC Davis with a BS in Animal Science, I got married to Brian and went to work for a local veterinarian as a Veterinary Technician. Through experience and with my degree I qualified to sit for the state licensing exam and passed. I worked in the field for 3+ years until we took advantage of a wonderful opportunity and moved to Tokyo, Japan where Brian's company had an office. We lived in Japan for almost 4 years and during that time I learned to speak Japanese (a bit),traveled to Hong Kong and Korea, and had our first two children, David and Meagen, fifteen months apart. We then moved back to the US in 1988 and settled in Concord. In 1989 we had a third child, Ian. Less than a year later we again moved overseas to Melbourne, Australia where we spent 4 absolutely terrific years. Our fourth, (and final!) child Kevin was born there. We moved back to our home in Concord and have spent the past 12 years raising our kids and enjoying life. I work seasonally at the Chronicle Pavilion as a Security Supervisor. A year ago I went back to work full time for two Oral Surgeons here in Concord. I know both men from our children having gone to school together and am enjoying the job immensely. Our two eldest children, David and Meagen are in their 4th and 3rd years of college respectively this year. The house seemd very quiet with only 2 kids in it now. School I attended Catholic schools for 12 of my 13 years. I went to McKinley school in San Leandro for kindergarten because back then the Catholic schools did not offer kindergarten. Then I went on to Assumption School also in San Leandro for all 8 years. Fond memories: dancing on Tuesdays with Mrs. Raymond, Civil War reports with Mrs. Crowel, having to chew a whole sheet of paper in 3rd grade with Mrs. Merriman. High School was grand! Moreau High School in Hayward was new and exciting. I played softball, did drama, and was active on the speech team. Then came college at UC Davis. Now that was living- all that freedom and little responsibility. I loved being an Animal Science major, played some more softb...Expand for more
all, joined a sorority (Kappa Kappa Gamma), and met my soon to be husband. College I loved my four years at UC Davis and wish I had taken more time to do my degree instead of rushing through it in the allotted four years. I could have gotten better grades and absorbed more that way. I did the natural progression of living situations: dorms, off-campus dorm, apartment, then house. I joined a sorority at the end of my freshman year and am still involved now, twenty-five years later. I remember romantic bike rides in the fog, rushing to 8am classes, trying to use a herd of sheep in an animal behavior experiment, working with a two-hundred pound hog in "Little I", attending football and basketball games, getting drunk for the first time and having a three-day hangover afterwards, being an IM referee and supervisor, taking mid-terms and final exams, partying on Thursday nights, only paying 35 cents a gallon for gas, driving my '65 Ford Falcon station wagon, and just plain having fun! Workplace I applied to Veterinary school soon after I had graduated from Davis but unfortunately did not have good enough grades to get in. So I went to work for a local vet and took the state licensing test for a veterinary technician and passed. I still hold that license. I worked for the vet for almost 3 years and then my husband and I moved overseas twice in the next ten years. I came home from the second assignment with four young children and not much "extra" time to put into a job. I took a security agent position at the Concord Pavilion, our local outdoor concert ampitheater. This worked out well because it was nights and weekends and not everyday so I could be home for the kids and went to work after my husband got home- thus no child care expenses. I am now working my thirteenth season there and my fifth as a supervisor. It's a real kick working there and occasionally meeting muscial superstars. I have finally gone back to work full-time. I am presently doing front office and insurance work for a pair of oral surgeons. My medical and small office experience has come in handy.
