Daniel's Story

Filling out a few check boxes in a questionnaire nor writing a few sentences ever adequately tells your story. After all these years I, and perhaps you, look back fondly on many that have crossed paths with you in your lifetime. Our experiences over time have shaped us into who we are. and we wonder what has become of so many of our old friends... So to catch up, here is my brief autobiography covering those years since Dulaney.... After graduating from Dulaney in 1973, I went on and enrolled at Towson State College, now Towson University, continuing my studies in art, but graduating with a BS degree in Business Administration (Concentration in Marketing) in 1978. While at Towson, I was involved in a number of activities there, including playing rugby for Towson. After graduating from college, I continued briefly working in a managerial position for Valley View Farms, Cockeysville, MD where I had worked since I was 16 years of age . After that I was hired on and was employed as a marketing representative for Honeywell Information Systems, living and working in Baltimore, Boston and Philadelphia. I remember one thing that was said to me and the others in our first day of training at Honeywell by a corporate trainer/instructor - "Forget everything you learned in college... That thought has remained with me to this day. "My time with Honeywell in the computer/information systems field was a great learning experience, particularly for "a kid" in his early twenties, getting the chance to work with different kinds of business and industry, to make them more efficient. Frankly I learned more about business through real world experiences such as that, and by my continuing education in fields of interest and expertise...The best education you experience in life is out in "the real world". I left Honeywell in January 1980, having felt a void in pursuing a career that didn't fulfill my artistic and creative abilities. I then relocated again from Philadelphia and moved back to the Baltimore area. I returned to Baltimore in January 1980, and began work at Tray Business Systems, a supplier of printing and graphics services, where I remained until July 2003. While there I designed and marketed printing and design work, ultimately moved into management, still maintaining accounts, and managed Graphic Arts activities for the company and upgraded/expanded the Graphics department there. During those years, I began dating Diane in 1980, we were married in April 1982, living first in Annapolis, MD and then Glen Burnie, MD. Our first son was born in June 1983, followed two years later by Chris, born in 1985. We moved to Severna Park, and then Millersville, MD in 1997. Our remaining years in Maryland we resided in Westminster, MD to be closer to Diane's family. I continued working for Tray Business Systems until July 2003 when I initially retired to take a break and move in a slightly different career direction. Those were great years, full of wonderful experiences where we raised our family and made many friends. After a brief hiatus, I joined the ranks of the self-employed, starting my own company, Graphic Concepts, (now known as Proforma Graphic Concepts) in September 2003, which I continue to operate to this day. Our activities/scope of business involve graphic design, printing and promotions, corporate branding and multimedia for businesses and primarily educational clients in 6 states. This has allowed me much greater flexibility in pursuing the many different interests I have away from my still busy work schedule. We lived in Westminster, MD until our move to Hanover, PA in 2005 where I continued operating my business while Diane continued her career as an OR Nurse. Relocating from Hanover, PA in 2010, we now reside in Myrtle Beach, SC, where I have relocated my business, and where I have been trying to scale back my business responsibilities (Dr's and wife's orders!) to take more time "smelling the roses", and engaging in other pursuits besides my company business. i had taken up singing when we lived in Westminster years ago beginning with the church choir at Annunciation (ABVM) up in McSherrystown, PA around 2002, at my wife's urging. Diane had sung almost all her life and even sang for the Baltimore Symphony Chorus before we were married. So I caught the singing bug as a bass. I continued singing in Pennsylvania, and after relocating to Myrtle Beach in 2011, sang for St, Andrews, then St. James in Conway, SC.. After St. James, we joined Our Lady Star of the Sea Choir in North Myrtle Beach where we presently sing for them. Away from music ministry in these church choirs, my wife and I sing for the North Myrtle Beach All-City Choir, composed of singers from nearby NC and SC. Also, after an audition, I have joined Vocal Edition, which is a kind of self-described professional ensemble vocal group based in Myrtle Beach area. I look forward to the beginning my first of hopefully many performances with them in the fall of 2023. Other than singing, my other interests lie in fine art, personal fitness, running and biking, and other pursuits. I fairly recently stepped away from 27 years of coaching lacrosse, with my last season just prior to Covid, at Myrtle Beach High School coaching varsity lacrosse as the offensive coach/offensive coordinator. Perhaps I will get back into coaching once fully "retired"... kind of miss it LOL! My personal interests have been quite varied over the years, and frequently involve community service, particularly with schools and youth. During our years living in Severna Park, MD, I was a trained volunteer Firefighter in Anne Arundel County, MD and ran fire, rescue and hazmat calls out of Earleigh Heights Fire Company, Severna Park, MD. I did this as a way to give back to the community. That was a rewarding experience and certainly dangerous at times, complete with long hours of seemingly constant training, and while on call, with extended periods of calm, interrupted by periods of excitement, fear and finally satisfaction that you did your job and helped people. I have mostly good memories of that, however, in that line of work, also have seen and experienced things that thankfully most people don't have to see or experience... I had also given time and service to Mt. St. Joseph High School Fathers' Club as a member and President during the years my sons were in attendance there. Diane was active in the Mt. St. Joseph Mothers' Club. That is a terrific school with a long history of excellence. While we lived in Westminster, MD, our youngest son Chris transferred to Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, PA because of their music program. My wife is an Alumni of Delone too. While there, Diane and I were heavily involved with the Delone Catholic Music Association and enjoyed the different activities there. Being a very small school with just under 500 students at the time and in a small town, it was a very close-knit private catholic school where it was very easy to meet many parents and their kids. We will never forget the Friday night high school football games there when, during those games we would prepare and serve food in the concessions stand adjacent to the field. We enjoyed our years there and those years of small town living. We have made many friends there at Delone and we continue to donate time, talent,...Expand for more
and resources to Delone Catholic High School, its Music Association and its Alumni & Development. I have been a lacrosse coach for a few different programs up in Maryland, Pennsylvania, currently at in Myrtle Beach, SC. (was at Socastee HS but most lately associated with Myrtle Beach HS). I was introduced to the game in 1970 at Dulaney HS by T. Kenny Carey, one of the greatest lacrosse coaches I have ever met. I really think he was the one who really started the ball rolling in Dulaney's rich lacrosse tradition. I regret that I wasn't able to actively play, as I have neurological deficit in my legs from birth (CP), but helped with the team in a managerial capacity, gaining considerable insight and knowledge of the game from Mr. Carey through our conversations after practices and assisting him at practices and games. I observed how he interacted with his players, and have followed his example, over the years by continuing to be a student of the game. Because of my time with Mr. Carey, a past Lacrosse Coach at Dulaney, I began a lengthy coaching career, in 1989, and continued coaching lacrosse until 2019. Thank you Mr. Carey. I will never forget you! In 1989 I began coaching and continued with the Green Hornets lacrosse program in Severna Park, MD, then after a break we relocated to Hanover, Pennsylvania, I also was heavily involved as a lacrosse coach during our years in Hanover and McSherrystown, PA. While there, I first served as Assistant Varsity Coach and JV Head Coach at New Oxford High School. I then relinquished that position to develop the first Youth Lacrosse Program in Adams County Pennsylvania, as part of the York County Lacrosse Association (YCLA). That lacrosse program has since grown to field four boys' teams and added girls' lacrosse. for all ages of girls aspiring to learn the game. A lot of great people, parents, businesses and others stepped up around New Oxford, and they are truly responsible for taking that organization to the great success they enjoy today. While in Pennsylvania, I served on the board of YCLA and was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the YCLA my last year there. After moving to Myrtle Beach, SC I have continued coaching varsity lacrosse at the high school level, first at Socastee HS and finally with Myrtle Beach HS. Working with kids is very enjoyable and rewarding, and I enjoyed many years doing it as a lacrosse coach. I have finished my 27th year coaching lacrosse, most recently as a varsity lacrosse coach as offensive coach/offensive coordinator for the varsity lacrosse program at Myrtle Beach HS in Myrtle Beach, SC. Coaching has been a very rewarding experience and no amount of money is of greater importance than giving time and mentoring the kids in our community. In other sports, I am still supporting the game of rugby in Baltimore, giving my time when I can. I learned to play the game when I was 18, and playing for Towson University, I found that even with my neurological leg motor deficit problems (mild cerebral palsy), I could effectively play rugby at a high level by compensating with great physical strength, determination, and hustle. Because of the nature of how rugby is played and its great team concept, I found that I could play at a high level.. This was a great experience and I relate this to the kids I coach today. After Towson, I played rugby for Chesapeake Rugby Club later known as Baltimore-Chesapeake Rugby Club, Doylestown PA Rugby Club, filled in games for New York Rugby Club and Lancaster PA Rugby Club... and am currently a member of Baltimore-Chesapeake Old Boys - an organization of over-35 and over-50 players. Alas, my playing days came to a close in 2010 with the Old Boys. All that wear and tear from playing rugby all those years led to two Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgeries that were needed and forced me to finally retire from playing. Absolutely LOVED playing all those years and wouldn't change a thing! :-) I still am associated with the Baltimore-Chesapeake Old Boys which supports the development and growth of youth rugby at the recreational and in high schools around Baltimore. It has been a great way to keep in touch with my former teammates and rugby playing friends over the years. I look forward to continue with fine arts, painting, drawing, etc and coaching/working with kids and staying athletically active. I am presently "semi-retired" (my wife would disagree) and TRYING??? to transition into upcoming retirement and the time to do what really matters... more time for personal interests and pursuits, volunteering and time with wife and family. Challenging, as I am now the President of the board of our community's HOA. Nobody would step into the position and the current president wanted to step down after eight years, so I reluctantly accepted the position. Very difficult balancing my own company business with that... so I am trying to maintain some sanity in either. A lot of responsibility hopefully for a relatively short period of time. Our Family... I met my wife Diane Long in 1979, we started dating in 1980, and finally in April 1982 we married. We have two sons, David (1982) and Chris (1985). Diane is currently an OR Nurse at the Grande Dunes Surgery Center, Myrtle Beach, SC. David, our oldest son, graduated from Mt. St. Joseph H.S. in 2001 and joined the Marine Corps. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, David enrolled in graphic design studies in San Diego, CA and is a graphic designer, an extremely talented portrait artist and fine artist (DBPortraitsdesign.com), makes vintage hockey goalie masks. He has played ice hockey for many years as a defenseman and mostly as a goalie. David and his family have moved from Ohio to Myrtle Beach, SC to be closer to my wife and I.. He and Natalie have four children between them. Grace Anne (Gracie) 8 , and Frances Mae (Frankie) 5 who are David's, Max 13 who is Natalie's son from a previous marriage, and Vincent Daniel (Vinny), born in April 2020. Hence we now have four grandchildren. Chris, our youngest son, graduated from Delone Catholic H.S. in McSherrystown, PA in 2004. Chris then enrolled at Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL and graduated in 2 years with an Associates Degree in Recording Arts and a BS Degree in Entertainment Business. He owns a recording studio and is a long time drummer, has been drumming since he was 7 years old and has continued his passion for music. Also plays bass. He is a trained recording engineer, producing and recording music for artists and writing and composing music and in the past was a drummer for Substance, 7th Seal and Calisus. He is currently the drummer for Tubefreeks. (Check out their latest videos and albums!) He presently resides in Waynesboro, PA. And so life moves on with new experiences and events... I really would enjoy hearing from all of the friends that have been a part of my life. Life is short and I cherish all the warm memories I have, and the friends and relationships that have been in my life, past, present and future. Let's reconnect! I have rekindled many old friendships through this site and facebook and welcome reconnecting with friends from over the years anytime. That's about it for this autobiography... Please keep in touch, and best wishes and good health to all! :-) Dan Dan Badolato Class of 1973
