Daniel's Story
I graduated from Bergan High School in Fremont, Nebraska in 1962. After high school I joined the Air Force. I was stationed at Lackland AFB in Texas, Lowery AFB in Colorado however I spent most of my time at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, California.
After leaving the Air Force, I worked for many different Aerospace Companies, including Boeing, Ryan, Rohr and General Dynamics. While working at General Dynamics in San Diego, California, I met my wife Betty.
I had always talked about going back to school to become a lawyer, but it seemed to never get done. Betty gave me the shove I needed. When I asked her to marry me she said she would, but that I had to finish Law School first.
In 1975 at the age of 30 I went back to school. Normally, you need to have four years of college before starting Law School. However, I was able to enter as a Special Student based upon my LSAT score. Western State University College of Law accepted Special Students (Students without an undergraduate degree) if they could make over 500 on the LSAT which was the median score at that time. That meant that a person without college had to beat over 50% of those with college taking the test. You needed a 500 to get in, I got a 501. It was destiny.
Completing Law School while working was a big challenge, especially since my job at General Dynamics had me traveling all over the country every week. Many times I would get off an airplane and go straight to night class. Things however were going to get even tougher.
In 1978, just before my final year at Law School, my fiancee Betty had a stroke from a brain aneurysm. The stroke left here with brain damage that left her with limited use of her left arm and hand and unable to walk.
I took the summer off school to help with her recovery. She was in rehabilitation, but they were not allowing her to even try and walk. So, when I took her home on weekend visits, we started trying to see if she could ta...Expand for more
ke a few steps. By September she was walking again and ready to come home. However, there was a small problem.
She had been living with her mother along with her two young children, and her mother was ill and unable to care for her. So, I took her and her children and moved them in with me. So now I have a full time job, a fiancee that has special needs, two children to raise, and Law School. No big thing.
The Lord was with us and one year later in July of 1979, within the same week, I married Betty and took the Bar Exam. Shortly thereafter Betty went back to college in order to exercise her mind. It worked like a charm and she made great strides both mentally and physically. She was amazing.
In 1984 we moved to Meadowbrook where we raised chickens, geese, peacocks, ducks, goats, sheep, a quarter horse, a pony, a donkey and too many cats and dogs to remember. At first I commuted to a law office in Newport Beach, later after the computer age began I opened my home office where I have been every since.
Back in 1974, I bought a hang glider and taught myself how to fly. I survived ten years flying it without killing myself. It is still hanging in my garage. I took some private pilots lessons in 1975, but after just 10 hours I had to quit to go to law school.
In 2001 I decided it was time to finish what I started in 1975. I got my private pilot license in 2002. I joined the Civil Air Patrol in 2003. I became the Commander of Squadron 59 in July of 2007.
The greatest joy of my life was my wife Betty and her two children who I eventually adopted.
Unfortunately, in 2006, Betty came down with Lung Cancer. She fought valiantly for two years. She lost her battle with cancer and died in March of 2008. Whatever I have accomplished or may accomplish nothing can compare to the honor of having been her husband and living with her for 38 years. She was a gift.
I am continuing to practice law, and to be active in Civil Air Patrol.
