Daniel's Story

Soon after graduation I enlisted in the US Army with the 11th All Hawaii Company consisting of all "local boys". Together with fellow Roosevelt grad and very close friend, Gary F. Funn, we took our solemn oath on July 4th, 1965. The both of us were assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. In August 1966 I had received the tragic news that our beloved brother Gary had been killed in action. Some of you fellow alumnus may remember our dear friend. Every time I go home to visit, I always make it a point to visit his resting place at Punchbowl NC. At that place in time my plan was to complete my 3 year enlistment , come back to Hawaii and pursue a career in Law Enforcement. Unfortunately, almost a year after I returned from VN, I was placed on orders to return to VN with the 3d Brigade, 82d Airborne Division. Because of this circumstance, I reluctantly volunteered to reenlist with a pronounced career change. So started my unplanned career with the US Army. During that time I married a gal from New Jersey and had two beautiful children that I am still very close to. Unfortunately, this marriage lasted just 7 years. In 1978 while stationed with the 25th Inf Div at Scholfield, HI., I met and eventually married my second wife who has been with me now more than 35 years. This marriage produced a another son and an adopted daughter. Today I am a proud grampa or "nono" of 7 grand kids as they prefer to call me. I retired from the Army in 1985. I went to work for General Dynamics soon after, but with prospects of impending layoffs I was able to get a job w...Expand for more
ith the Postal Service. Thanks to the GI Bill, I received a degree in Airconditioning and Heating and was able to secure a job as a Building Mechanic. This past January 2013 I retired from the American work force, hopefully forever. I am eternally grateful to the God that has always blessed me with more than I truly deserve. I am a born again Christian who has come to recognize the importance of GOD in all of our lives. I remain active in our local church and thanks to retirement I recently enlisted in the Southern Baptist Men's Disaster Relief effort. Hope I am never asked to respond! My sincere apologies to many of my Roosevelt Alumnus friends whom I do not remember because of the many years that have transpired since. I do remember the few who were in my close sphere of activities, especially my HS sweet heart whom I shall never forget. I find that retirement suits me fine. I spend most of my days working on 1.5 acres or tinkering on different projects in my workshop. I spend at least 3 early mornings a week at the Y each week. My other hobbies include hunting and fishing. Just returned from a very relaxing trip to Oahu with my daughter and her family in June so she could acquaint her husband and children with the many family members still residing there. I currently reside in a rural area, not far from the city proper of Fort Worth, Texas. Many alohas to those classmates who remember me for one reason or another. I may be inclined to repay your kindness by using my HS album as means of jarring my feeble memory. God bless you. Live long and prosper!
