Daniel's Story

"A man must have a little madness... or else he never dares cut the rope - and be free!" - Anthony Quinn in Zorba the Greek, 1964 More than you want to know: Regular stuff now - -Artist/craftsman/writer. I've posted some photos of my work. More can be seen on Twitter or Facebook at artbynowak -Still with the one girl -Father of 2 (one of each) -Grandfather of 7 (6 boys, one girl) -Red wine -Still painting, writing, building stuff until I die. No desire to retire. -Took eleven years, but finally finished my coming of age memoir "A Regular Joe, Surviving the Sixties." Maybe it will get published. Took up background acting for the hell of it. Just as extra, no speaking parts. Been on The Cleaning Lady, The Curse, Duster, Outer Range, Love Lies Bleeding, My truck is in Big Sky! Regular stuff then- -Graduated from Box Elder Junior High in Brigham City, Utah -Went to Horace Mann/Crawford in San Diego as a Freshman and Sophomore, Estancia in Costa Mesa as a Junior and Senior. -Ran from the Cops. --Drove a blue and white 59 Ford Station Wagon w/ surfboard sticking out the back. -At Crawford, hung out mostly with Fred Orr (blue 56 Chevy) and Randy Kroll (350 Honda). -Surfing Tourmaline, Mission Beach, La Jolla Cove and Black's. Cruisin El Cajon Blvd., Halloween at San Diego State. -FM underground pirate radio with no commercials that played things like Hoyt Axton's "The Pusher" and Velvet Underground and the Electric Flag and James Cotton. Stuff that never made the Top 40. -Ran from the Man. -Had a terrific girlfriend for three years, but she wisely escaped in my senior year. -Spent most of my school time in the art department, at Estancia with Mama Cass (Mrs. Cassady). Cass was a gas. Man, I was a lousy T.A. -At Estancia, hung out mostly with Mike Stewart (white 58 chevy convertible) and Ted Mayer (green 69 mustang). -Ran from the fuzz. -Surfing Laguna, Huntington Beach pier, THE WEDGE. -Lunchtime in The Field with the FFA (Future Freaks of America). -Serious crush on young blonde Estancia U.S. History teacher Mrs. Stone my Junior Year. -Parked cars for a living, mostly at the old Rueben E. Lee restaurant and Ha'penny Inn, also washed dishes at Denny's on Harbor Blvd and painted apartments on the Island. -Cruisin' Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard, Fountain Valley Drive-in, The Golden Bear and the Magic Mushroom, Licorice Pizza Records, Concert Days at Estancia with seriously good bands. -Ran from the Heat. -Those little orange tabs of mescaline, brick parties and foil rolls of whites. - The 1968 Newport Pop Festival, the first Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival. - Graduated Orange Coast College as one of those anti-war freaks. Occupied Administration Building, ran from Feds. Co-chaired OCC Students for McGovern! . -Jeez, was that stuff fun! Stuff between then and now- -Finished high school by tripping and falling on my nose. Picked up, dusted off and nose fixed by Beautiful Passing Stranger. -BPS was Beverly Peters, who may have looked about 14, but was much wise...Expand for more
r than me. I finally wised up enough to marry her in 1973. -Rocked through the 70's swinging high-rises by the Bay. A swing stage is kind of like a surfboard - only 40 stories up! -Rolled through the 80's settling down to raise a family. Well, raised a family, anyways. -Burned and burnt-out working for the Bossman, had my chance to be rich, but would have had to be somebody's ____ (censored by Classmates). Went my own way and worked on schools, hospitals, prisons, dams, bridges, powerhouses, wineries, churches, all over California. -Did OK working for myself. Had a really easy boss, so made it to almost all my kid's ball games, concerts and art shows. -Have the greatest partner and muse in the world, and learned that she is the kindest, most tolerant and forgiving person I could ever find. She hasn't thrown me out yet. O.K., she has, and I deserved it, but she always took me back! -I have managed (thanks to her) to live an almost respectable life (surprise to you). So far. -Damn, that was pretty fun, too! Wierd stuff anytime- -Took a joyride in Greg Morris of Mission Impossible's TransAm in 1969. Had the chance and just couldn't resist. Sorry, Mr. Morris. -Saw bigfoot up close on the north coast and it was no bear. Trust me, I've been chased by bears, and this wasn't one! -Been chased by bears! Some Boy Scout I was. They're faster uphill than down. -Can operate a teletype machine if one still exists. -Got electric-shocked unconcsious and saw the light, but was saved by a guy I barely knew. I almost had the answer, people! -Once my crew blew up a truck full of solvent - by accident - while working on the lower level of the Bay Bridge! It was the Oakland side so we didn't get in trouble because nobody got killed. But a quarter-million people couldn't get to work. Some 15 minutes of fame! Sorry for that one, too! -OK, some of this stuff wasn't so fun. Lifetime achievement stuff- -Won a Revel national model car contest when I was 12 with my purple 32 Ford roadster! -Got a hole-in-one on a par 3 hole with a nine iron when I was 13, bowled a 278 the same year. -Kept my old 1970 Chevy Nova Coupe (327, Edelbrock high-rise, Holley 650 double pumper, headers) and restored it with my son. -Restored an historic 1890 brick farmhouse exact in every detail, but built to code. -Returned to college after 25 years and finished what I had started. -Am honored by having a landscape painting included in the Permanent Collection of the California State Capitol Museum. It's hanging in the Senate Rules Committee Lobby. -Caught (and released) a 24" rainbow trout in a Sierra creek on a dry fly. Still a California boy, still having a blast, I am one lucky man, and I don't mean the fish. Old friends and classmates from the days of "Weed and Wine in '69", I hope that your paths have brought you the same amounts of joy and passion and good fortune that mine has brought me. Collect the pleasures, bury the pains along the way! Best to you, Daniel
