Daniel's Story

Well , thinking about back in high school ,that's what this site is about I guess . so here goes ( through MY eyes, that is ), 1969-1970 was my first year at Del Valle High as a freshman! So, to start my story, The ONLY two friends I had made in the first week of school were Malcolm Short and Johnny Silvia ! Great friends! And we got along very well ! They talked me into running for Freshman Student Council ! So I did , (well they helped a lot!) And sure enough, I was on the Council! That was a pretty neat time learning all that stuff about how things should be done! Going to all the Council meetings ,talking to the freshmen about there involvement, I got to meet a lot of people and Mr. Pierce (that I will come to know and see almost daily , (well ,the days I went to school that is ! ) That was ,I think the only year I missed only 3 or 4 days the whole year . I was into the school stuff big time. I did basket ball for a bit, that's how I got the nick name of Grasshopper, I could out jump all other players at the toss up at the start of the games . I was good, made a few baskets. played in a couple of away games , but it wasn't for me . I was also in the FFA . That year (1970) I started with raising Rabbits, had some bad luck, changed over into raising a hog! BIG CHANGE! That was great, though it didn't take off till Sophomore year ! I only about broke even when it came time to sell that hog at the Fair & FFA SHOW & AUCTION! 1971 came and I got my car! And that' when my school attendance went way sour ! And that is when Mr. Pierce got to know me very well ! What he didn't know was, I had my Mothers handwriting down great, and for a kid as "sick" as I was on the notes that I turned in to him , I think I should have died at least 3 times ! It's a laugh now ! He would take the note , read it , smile , then write me a pass , and out I went , as I rarely went to school more then 3 days a week ! I am lucky in the way I could read up a bit on the test subject an hour or so before , then take the test and pass! Not good I know now, but back then , I just had things to do, people to see, places to be! And me and some friends ( I had more now then just the two from my first week of school , Being on the Council helped to be known all over the school, WE sure tried to do all we could away from school ! One of our best things to do in March and April was to skip out early from school and head to , what we called "the ropes" ! It was on Onion creek just south of BAFB. (Bergstrom Air Force Base) (The ABIA is what it is called now, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport) Someone had tied a rope from a tall tree that leaned out over the water , you could grab on , swing out and flip or what ever and land in cool water, about seven feed deep , then swim back , or , about 15 feet down stream was a rock boulder you could stand on that was maybe 5 feet deep. it easily held five people ! We didn't stay too long the days we went , cause my friends had to get home "after school" ! That was back when there was DEEP water "in" Onion creek " ALL "the time ! Another time, 1971 , Duffy (Malcolm, his first name) and I went fishing at 4 am on a Tuesday , we were listening to some music and was wide awake all night, and well our families needed food, and we could get the fish and be back in time to get to school ! So we jumped in Duffy's brothers Land rover and took off to our best fishing hole ! About 1/2 hour down the road, the right front wheel came off ! We both saw it at the same time ! I jumped in the back to the left side , so all the weight would be on that (left) side to keep the car level ! Duffy coasted to a stop ! No damage done ! A "mile" walk down the road , we found the wheel , rolled it back , took a nut off the other 3 wheels , and back on the road again ( we found out later , his brother was doing some body work inside the well and had only put the wheel on temporarily to finish the work the next day) So, back on the road again , we made it to our fishing hole, and no I'm telling you where it is! Three hours later we had fish for both families , {8 are in my family & 7 in his } and headed back ! Then we realized , it was just too late to go to school ,---1/2 hour drive time - wheel came off --1 hour to find -- still a 1/2 hour drive to fishing hole --3 hours to fish --1 hour back home -- it was after 10 am ! (darn) And then we still had to clean all the fish ! So school will just have to wait till tomorrow ( that is if something important to me doe...Expand for more
sn't pop up! ) Duffy and I did a lot of hunting too , His dad had a lot of friends that had land that we could hunt on , so we brought home deer meat for both families as needed ! That cost me a lot of missed school ! Well I really didn't "miss it "!! *1971/19722* started off with me having another hog in the FFA that had all the makings of a "Grand Champion Hog "! During the school year we got with other FFA classes from other high schools in towns around Del Valle , we would compare our hogs and get rewards for 1st 2nd and 3rd place! I had a Chester White breed, it was a great hog , I won quite a few ribbons and trophies (though small) in the get togethers with the others schools! The Travis County Fair was coming up and all our Hogs were going to be entered into A Huge FFA Show and Auction, to be held at the same area! I was expected to do really well! Some of the Hogs last year sold for as much as $7,000 each. I spent a lot of time grooming and getting my hog in top shape ! Well, one month before we left , to get everything set up into the tents , at the fairgrounds, someone "poisoned" my hog , and it was over for me . Oh , I had ideas of who could have did it , but could not prove a thing . People do bad for money ! My loss kind of sent me down till the end of the school year ! I just didn't do much ,no swimming , no hunting or fishing ! Oh I kept my grads up! Still only went maybe 3 times a week, I just spent a lot of time taking down my hog pen and cleaning the area up, to the way it was before I got the hogs , I guess I wanted closer on that ! So I spent most of my time doing it . My friends came around some and wanted me to go play , I said thinks but no ,I just needed to do this. 1972/1973 , Got my mind clear and on school ! Senior now , more places to be ,people to see , and things to do ! As I remember that first month of school was the most days I had ever went to school! Even the next month I went most of it , then I got the itch. I had to go and see and do things again ,so school fell out of my "to do list" ! I kept my grades at a "C" so I was happy ! We skipped out and swam a lot, drove to a place called Apache Shores , more swimming and making out with the Ladies that skipped with us ,(us guys liked that a lot) Some times we just drove down a road to see what was there !? I had no way of knowing that 3 months from Graduation, I would be in a bad wreck! Well, that ended my senior year and school for me! I was in the Hospital for 5 weeks , took me 7 months to walk again. I worked hard on my body and wanted to do more , so then I joined the Air Force. Went places I sure didn't want to. Got out after 6 years. Got my head straight , then got a job driving a 18 wheeler for Bush Hog Co. out of Selma, Alabama. Did that a bit over 2 years , saw a lot of small towns south of Interstate 40! Stayed between the ditches and no crashes! Moved around and lived in Al., Fl. , N Cl, Tx., drove all lower southern states, been to Mexico too much , last time , almost had to stay! As we {My self and David Skates} were in line to come back across into Texas, we had been over there for two days shop[ng , and drinking and , well OTHER stuff too ! We were #3 in line with about 15 cars behind us , the Guards came out with a road block and set it right behind us !?!? WE crossed and came straight to Austin ! That was the last I have been there ! Never found out why they closed the crossing but it was closed for 3 weeks !??! I had moved back to Austin after Bush Hog. After endless small jobs, I was a carpenter and so you worked for a Co. till the house was done , then you went to get on with another Co. in and around Austin , I got on with the State at the TX School For The Blind by pure luck , the man only gave me a try because I had been in the Air Force ! well after 6 month of the 7 people he had on his Maint, crew he made me #2 man , (worked there 21 years ) Just before I got on at the school , I met a great lady ! Miss Kayle Sue Hobbins ! And after a few month of dating, we took a day ride to the coast ! It felt great and right so I pledged my love to her on Corpus Christi beach ! (She said YES!) Still in love with her at only 33 years together, We have two girls and a boy , well they are older now , in fact we got grand kids, boy and two girls! . Drop me a line or two if you want to ask me about something ! I'm sure I will add more as the old brain cell work now and again........
