Daniel's Story
Life
Well, it's been a winding road, but I settled down and got married in 2002. My beautiful wife had three kids from a previous marriage, all now in their early 20s. (I swear after about 3 months of raising teenagers, I called my parents & apologized for everything!)
As of today, 08/22/10 in addition to the 3 step children, April & I have 3 kids of our own. Katelyn Rae & Cierra Rose were born 03/28/05 (which is also my birthday) fraternal twins now 5 1/2 years old. James Landon was born 11/05/07...The Shapley legacy continues!
I am also a (step) grandfather! April's oldest daughter, Amber, has a 4yr old boy and a 2yr old girl. Kyna has a daughter that just turned 1 last month. Yeah, that doesn't make me feel old...
Workplace
Well, believe it or not, I actually did get my head out of my ass & finished up my degree... (way back in '98) then I became what I always wanted to be; a graphic designer. I did a lot of freelance work before I landed a job as Art Director for the United West ad group at Unified Western Grocers. (Basically, this is a chain of grocery stores on the west coast that I did weekly ads, coupon books & store signage for. -Yeah, pretty creative stuff eh?)
Well, the job title sounded nice, but it was not very creative ...p...Expand for more
retty boring work actually. Oh, and the pay sucked.
I ended up transferring within the company to the computer support department (Totally by luck, I happened to know the guy who ran the dept. and he offered me 5K more to do it.) I knew next to nothing about computers. I have no idea how I made it through the interview...or through the first month for that matter. It was quite an experience.
Well, here I am 10 years later and I'm running the department, doing much better than (financially) than I was in my "chosen field" of graphic design. Imagine that!
We are a technical support desk within a grocery wholesale company that provides services for over 3000 stores along the West coast and moving steadily eastward. We've got stores in Mexico, Hawaii & even Guam. Basically, if you're at a store & you see something that plugs in or runs on batteries, we support it. We solved 22,000 calls last year, and my crew consists of only 12 people. (yeah, I can tell you're impressed...*yawn*)
Anyway, here I am doing something I never even considered while in school. The pay is good, benefits are great. I have my own office & get to yell at people, just like a good corporate citizen that I've become.
I like my work, but damn...I wish I had more time to draw.
