Daniel's Story
Hey now !
Well let me think.......It's been such a long time. Right before I was going to graduate in Summer 68' I was called into the councellors office and told I did not have enough credits to graduate and I would have to go to summer school (too many ditching parties and the one way at Elysian Park). Remember those days ? I remember cruising up and down Mott looking for girls to go to the one way (elysian park) or cruising the other high schools like Lincoln, Garfield, Huntington Park, Montbello, El Rancho looking for ditching parties. What a blast, listening to oldies on our 8 track tape players and throwing chingasos with White Fence, Varrio Nuevo, 2nd St and the Pomeroy Boys. We didn't back down from no one except................some one with a gun. Back then things weren't as violent as they are now.
When school ended in June of 68' I started working at Sears on Soto and 8th st. I met a girl, she got pregnant and we had a son. We were young, only 19 years old. We lasted about three years married until my homies started coming back from Viet Nam...Expand for more
, and some did not come back. I guess I got lucky when I got married because my lottery number came up too high and I never got drafted. We divorced after three years, but I'll say one thing for me, I supported my son all the way up until he turned 18 and we still have a close relationship.
After the divorce I did the disco thing at all the clubs doing sex drugs and disco dancing......Yea Baby ! After that scene got old I re-married in 1976 and stood married til 1991. By that time I was into cocaine and an alcoholic and we divorced after 15 years. I moved to Northen Calif. to start a new life an found more of the same in Santa Rosa, Ca. more sex, drugs and rock & roll. I did that scene until the year 2000, when I finally got a hold of myself and got into Recovery, which has saved my life. I have been clean and sober for 8 years now. I share this with all of you because I know there are people still out there reaching out, looking for hope. There is hope in Recovery, but it is a life long committment.
Sincerely, Danny Torres
