Daniel's Story
Life
I am married to Shivani Arjuna (the former Kathryn Annabel, of Canisteo, who was my date for our senior ball, BTW) I have a son by a previous marriage (Jon, who lives in Seattle and works in computers at the U. of WA), and a stepson (Galway McCullough, who lives in NYC and works as an actor in theatre, movies, TV commercials, etc.) Childhood hunting and fishing outings with my father and brothers laid the foundation for my second career as an outdoor communicator. After graduating from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, I received a PhD in French literature from Rice University in Houston, TX. I taught French for three years at the State University of New York at Albany, then moved to Wisconsin in 1972 to teach French and English at Northland College in Ashland. I held a number of teaching and administrative positions at Northland, the last of which was Outdoor Writer in Residence from 1988-1995. My second career began in 1972, when my first magazine article, a story about a successful deer hunt, was published in Outdoor Life. In 1980, I began writing for Wisconsin Sportsman and other publications on a part-time basis. In 1984, I was hired to host Outdoor Wisconsin, a weekly TV program produced by Milw...Expand for more
aukee Public Television. Outdoor Wisconsin is now in its 21st season. I served as editor of Wisconsin Outdoor News from 1991-99. Now, as contributing editor, I writes regular features for WON. I am also a regular contributor to Outdoor Life, Wisconsin Sportsman, Sports Afield, Upland Almanac and other print and online publications. I have written two books, the Outdoor Wisconsin Cookbook, and Fish Wisconsin, and have produced a number of videos in the North American Trails Home Video Library. I was named Conservation Communicator of the year in 1986 by the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation. I received the Gordon MacQuarrie Award for excellence in environmental communication in 1990 from the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. In 1999, I received the Excellence in Craft Award from the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. My writing and TV programs have won numerous awards from the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers, the Outdoor Writers Association of America and other organizations. My latest venture is a website, which you can find with most search engines, launched in 2004. Mt website features "guest shot" stories by other writers, a weblog and an online store (Dan's Mall).
