Life
Hmmmmm. I still work in Sound. Big surprise! Although it's morphed a bit...
After college, I worked for 5 years in a couple of NYC music recording studios, went freelance for 5 years, had enough of the music biz, ran my own recording studio for 10 years, then I decided I'd had enough of working for myself. I went to work for a bigger fish - at Sync Sound (a major metropolitan audio-post production facility) in NYC. I recorded and/or edited and/or mixed the audio for a lot of doumentaries, specials, animated series (MTV's "Daria" and "Downtown"), children's programming ("Bear In the Big Blue House", "Book Of Pooh", "Out Of the Box"), and just before a career shift, I won an Emmy for mixing the CBS documentary "9/11." - But let's rewind for a moment -
I got married in 1988) to an author, Madeleine Robins, and have 2 daughters, now 13 and 19.
So, what about that career shift? After being a life-long New Yawker working in the sound biz...Expand for more
, I pulled up stakes and moved to San Francisco in December '02 to work for Digidesign, the company that makes the audio workstations I'd been using for the previous 12 years (Pro Tools, for those of you who have used the product). It's a big change, but a good one...essentially I'm now helping design and manage aspects of the gear and software I used to use. The biggest adjustment was to working in a semi-corporate environment, and it worked well for several years....until...
Fast forward to October 2008, and companies country-wide are downsizing. So I became a statistic for a few months. In March 2009 I accepted a position at Skywalker Sound in Marin County. It feels like I'm back home - but home was never like this! Not exactly "back on the A/V squad" (since I never was on it), but it's great - I get to support the creatives who work in sound editing and sound design for major movies.....and can't beat the beauty of the work location!
