Darby's Story
After high school, I attended and graduated from Birmingham-Southern college with a degree in Secondary Education/Political Science and History. I taught high school for 3 years in Birmingham, AL, before getting married and moving to Tuscaloosa, AL. We lived there 4 years, during which time I worked for the chamber of commerce doing administrative work and event planning. I also attended the University of Alabama, and graduated with a MA in American Studies. I fully intended to pursue a PhD and teach on the college level, but that did not work out. In 1998, we moved the Silver Spring, MD (Washington DC suburbs) for my husband to attend graduate school at UM in higher ed administration. y consider to be the best job in the world. I loved event planning, working with corporations and donors, and handled events as large as a gala for 1600 people! It was great! During this time, we also had our first son, Mason, who was born January 7, 2004. In October 2004, we moved to Greencastle, IN, for my husband's job. It was quite a transition to go from the DC suburbs to a small town of 9000. While here, I have worked as an advisor to a women's group on campus, and become an advisor to a local political candidate. In March 2007 we had our 2nd son, Garrett. And now we are beginning the process of packing up to move again. This time we head back south, to Rome, GA, again for my husband's job. We look forward to being closer to family, all of whom have remained in middle TN.
