Darel's Story
Life
Joined the Air Force right after school. Stationed in Missouri for two years, Japan for four years, Florida for 3 years, California for 2 years, Korea for a year, and now in Hawaii. Had a brief break in service and lived in Orlando, FL, for 18 months. Married Kasumi Naito from Japan in Feb 1996. Daughter Emily Mae was born on May 13, 2000. Son Kento Roy was born on November 9, 2002. Katie Ryan in the 1991 list has the right idea that it's BS (I'm not as polite as her) that we have to pay to email each other from within this website. And now I have to give you my addy even more sneakier, since their addy sniffer discovered my other method. My email addy is thordrk at yahell dot c.o.m. I'm sure you can figure out what I'm trying to say with that one. Please feel free to email me. I look forward to catching up on the past . . . wow, I just realized it's been 15 years now since graduation day. Anyone else got gray hairs yet? Could be worse, I guess. At least I'm not balding like my brother Daniel is. Thanks, Dad!!!!
Military
The best part about my time in the mili...Expand for more
tary has been the travel. I love seeing new places. I have spent no more than 4 years at any single place since I've been in the military, and the average is actually less than 3 years. I've been overseas many times, and I even lived in Japan for 4 years. As a married man with a family, the constant moving around gets a bit inconvenient, but at least I won't be in the military forever. I have already decided that I will be retiring at 20 years, unless something drastic happens between now and then to change my mind. Don't get my wrong, the military was a great start on my life, but today's military is not the same as I joined 15 years ago, and I'm losing patience with it. I fully support those parents who are urging their kids to stay away from the recruiters. Some people are made for the military, but unfortunately noone knows if they are or not until it's too late and the dotted line has been signed. And especially, with ol' "W" making policy, it is just too possible that you may not survive your first term of enlistment and make it to separation. Why take the chance?
