Darlene's Story

I married right out of high school. That lasted three years and took me to Kansas. Then it was back to Boulder, and working while attending college. I had always wanted to move to a warmer climate, so when an opportunity presented itself in 1982, I was off to sunny Florida! I spent the next twenty years there, raising quarter horses for a few years during that time, and met my soul mate there. We spent many years both working and playing hard; we both love to travel. He was an avid sailor, so I became one also. We raced sailboats every week and most weekends, as he owned a sail company and we would travel and race with clients. We raced in many states of the U.S. and also traveled to Europe and the Caribbean to race. I was an accountant and ultimately a financial comptroller. In 2002, we stepped away from the rat race and moved to British Columbia, Canada to live a higher quality of life. I telecommuted for a few years. Between 2006 & 2014, I spent several months each year sailing, either in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, on my 51' catamaran. I've done two trans-Atlantic crossings with the boat and had a fabulous time seeing new places and making new sailing friends who share my lifestyle. Recently we sold the catamaran and in 2019 purchased a motor yacht. I had decided it was time for a floating condo since I spend a few months each year on the boat and wanted less work than the sailboat required. I love the new boat. each year (by both land and sea!) -- so many beautiful places in the world to explore! My friends say I'm a gypsy . . . I love nature and the outdoors. Summers will usually find me at my home in southeastern British Columbia, Canada enjoying mountain hikes, nature walks, canoeing, and working on my genealogy. My passion these days is genetic genealogy, using DNA to help identify/confirm relationships. I first began working on my family genealogy in the early 1980s. Once DNA came on the scene, I tested both of my parents. Now I stay busy mapping their chromosomes and trying to break down brick walls of unknown ancestors. I am one of the leaders on Wikitree, a one-world tree. My personal family tree has over 80,000 individuals in it, added and researched over the past 40 years... I met my soul mate in 1988. He loves to travel as much as I do, and the two of us together achieve more than we either ever would have alone. We're good together. We have built two homes, from scratch, by ourselves. Between the two of us, we can do almost anything required for a home. One is a timber frame cabin, and our latest one (which we're still completing when we aren't off gallivanting around the world) is a log house. We cut the trees on our own land, I peel and sand them, and then we use them. We get them milled as we need. We live in a beautiful part of the world in our own little heaven surrounded by the forest and next to a creek. We share our lives with a golden doodle.
