Darlene's Story
Life
So much water under the bridge since high school, and yet those high school memories are the ones that come back to me time after time. Since that time I have been married, had two kids --Ryan Wetherington Hyler (Buzz) and Katy Spring Hyler Spence--divorced and now remarried to Steve Hitte. I have one absolutely adorable and precocious granddaughter, Annabella Kathryn Spence (Bella). The Kathryn comes from my first name. My daughter wanted to name her after me, but no one in their right mind would name a child Darlene! I attended Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Az., then came home to finish at UNCA. I taught German/French at Asheville High (!) for 14 years and then went to work for Delta Airlines as a German speaker in the international inflight dept. In Feb. 2003, as a result of 9/11, I was furloughed. (that's aviation-speak for "laid-off"!) Afterward, I taught ESL for a year at Wake Tech in Raleigh. Then when my husband, Steve, transferred to Atlanta I went to work for Omni International Airlines, a private international charter airline whose technical support center is in Mainz, Germany, a city I know well from my Delta days. live in Brookhaven near Buckhead, but I still keep my house in Asheville because that is where we will retire! We also keep a little mountain chalet up in Little Switzerland. And, oh yes, we have a change-of-life "child" -- a little Maltese named Lambchop that we got 3 years ago from a rescue service in Charlotte. I often think about my classmates from AHS, especially since I taught some of their children during my time as a teacher. It felt really strange to be teaching alongside people like Eloise Beam, Ruth Gillis and Ms. E! I would love to hear from anyone from our class. I often wonder what happened to everyone, and I have really missed having reunions!! What is up with that???? 9/09; Life is nothing but change, is it not? I am now back with Delta, this time as a Spanish speaker. During a summer break while teaching ESL I decided to study Spanish (my way of staving off alzheimers), and so I went to Quito, Ecuador to study; loved Ecuador so much that I keep going back again and again. (the fact that everything is cheap doesn't hurt!) We are still in the ATL, but will move back to AVL in the next few years. Maybe I'll run into some of you there!
