Darlene Gregoire:

CLASS OF 1965
Bellwood, PA

Darlene's Story

Who am I really? That's a hard question to answer. Time changes us physically and experience changes our perspectives and personalities. After a divorce, I married an amazing man with interests similar to mine. Since our marriage on December 9, 1978, we have traveled across the U.S. twice, been to Canada and Mexico and did this on our Harley. We have been hunting in Alaska and Colorado, fishing for blue marlin, had our own business and now we're looking at retirement. Jene wants to go to Alaska on the Harley but I don't know if I am up to that trip. Health issues. I love spending time with my grandchildren. I have nine. Most of them are teenagers. Two are in their early 20's. They are full of surprises, mostly good, some not so. One of the things that I have come to look forward to is the All-Class Reunion at DelGrosso's Amusement Park in the summer. It's great reconnecting. Most want to know who you are now and how your life experiences have brought you to this point in your life. I consider myself fortunate to have known each and every one of you in the class of 1965. Some of us traveled through our entire time in school together. I recently found a picture of my first grade class and was surprised that I could name most of the people in the picture. Mrs. Miller was our teacher. I still remember the day she paddled either Dean or Dale Merritts. There was an old crank up record player in the room and we put our heads down on our desk and listened to music after recess. I hope someone will read this and remember those times. Does anyone remember 2nd grade in the basement at the Presbyterian church and how it would flood...Expand for more
when it rained hard? Mrs. Shriver was our teacher and she was quite strict. Then in third grade we got Miss Fowler. She was old-old-old. I had the misfortune of sitting right in front of her desk and got the full force of her shreaking when she was mad. Miss Cornmesser was that 4th grade teacher. My best memory was that we got to use the iron fire escape for the first time and fire drills were a hoot! Then came Mrs. Blake in 5th grade. She was one of the best teachers in the South Side School. Her reputation as a mean and strict teacher had us shaking in our shoes for the first day but she made learning fun. Remember painting the windows for the holidays and keeping the "weather calendar"? Sixth grade - Mrs. Adams. Enough said. Then came the jumble of teachers in junior and senior high. Good times!!!! October 10, 2009. Remember that motorcycle trip to Alaska I mentioned before? Well, we did it this summer. We left on July 1 and got back on August 17. It was wonderful! It's hard to believe that the temperature in Fairbanks can get into the 90's but it can and it did. We were fortunate to be in Fairbanks when my nephew returned from Iraq. He had no idea we were going to be there and the look on his face when he saw my husband was one I'll never forget. We did a lot of salmon fishing while we were there. The best fishing was in Hope. We went down the Kenai Peninsula to Seward but it rained and was very foggy the whole time we were there. Then we went to Homer and went out on a boat and did some halibut fishing. That was great and I want to do it again sometime. The vacation was great but it was good to get home.
