Darrell's Story

Life Upon graduating from the Mighty Peabody Magnet Warhorses, I entered the U.S. Army. From '86 - '87, I served at Ft. Lewis, Washington. I got married, yet, am now a single father of four [ Darrell II, Andre`, Jade, & Jeremy]. From '87 - '90, I served three yrs. in Illisheim & Vilseck, W. Germany. When I returned stateside, I went back to Ft. Lewis from '90 - '91. From '91 - 92, I served at Ft. Polk, LA., where I E.T.S.'d from military service Dec. '92. In January '93, I enrolled at "The S.U." Southern University, Baton Rouge, LA. I graduated undergrad in '98, receiving my B.S. in Speech Language Pathology & Audiology. From there, I proceeded to Sacramento, CA. for a year to teach school,( '98 - '99). I then returned to Baton Rouge, where I taught school for one more year('99 - '00). Then in Aug. '00, I returned to Graduate school, back to "S.U". (JAGUAR FO' LIFE!!!), and enrolled in History - (Afrikan - American Studies). This was inspired by the fact that in 1996, while researching my family history, it was revealed that my Great Great Grandfather was a BUFFALO SOLDIER, Sgt Henry Johnson, Delta Trp. 9th Cavalry, and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for Bravery and Intrepidity! In May '02, I received my Masters of Arts in History Afrikan American Studies. I then returned to CA, where, I returned to the classroom. Because there is sorely a lack of Brothaz in the school system to identify with our youth, I pursued my calling and stepped up to the plate, to be some type of role model. Our youth are labeled "THROWAWAY" kids, if they are not functioning on level by third grade! Hence, instead of an out - pouring of funds to ensure that they do not fall through the cracks, that money is diverted to the justice and penal system, to plunge them into systematic and perpetual servitude, ladened with multiple Felonies! I first taught at a GANGLAND High School(Burbank High), where still in the early New Millennium, they are still "Claim'n Setz of BLOOD & CUZ"! From there, I went to work with an organization called JUVENILES AT RISK. I helped prepare youth 15 - 21 yrs. to secure their G.E.D., and work toward their H.S. diploma. Also, schooling them for what awaits them when they venture out into the world on their own independence. As well, I taught Creative Writing / Spoken Word Poetry, incorporated with Black History at a College Prep and Performing Arts Elem. School. Every position I ever held in any school system(LA & CA) was spent working with underpriviledged and socioeconomically disadvantaged youth, to help better prepare them to excel in life. My priorities are teaching Knowledge of Self, Reading fluency, Vocabulary Expansion, and Oratorical skills. As a Poet, I am the author of "LOST SOULZ" ISBN 0759604797. My work is created in the Flava of "GHETTO POETRY". Peep me 'cause I got that Fiyah! The works are a mix of Spiritual and Contemporary Worldly Flow! It is available through Barnes & Noble, Books - A - Million (& .coms), Author House.com (1stBooks Library). I am thankful for My Life. I am Blessed by JAH, to still be alive. In February '00, I lost my mother, which has to be the most depressing and devastating experience a person will ever know. Having virtually given up on life, I slipped into Chronic Depression, and no longer cared for Life. I became very wreckless at that point. Then, September '00, the realization that JAH was keeping me here for some purpose suddenly came to me. Just off the campus of Southern, I had a motorcycle wreck. I was doing 105mph on Harding Blvd., when I had to make a sudden stop for a car to cross my path. However, when I attempted to brake, the momentum was too great, and the crash was inevitable. As the bike began to "fishtail" my entire Life flashed before my eyes within about five seconds. I looked at the speedometer, and 105 seemed to be emblazoned on my brain! The back brakes were locked up, but the inertia had me sliding for about 40 ft. All I could do at this point was to tap the front brakes. Although I've never ridden a bull, it is the only experience that I can liken it to. All of a sudden, the bike began to buck. It was a big bike too! A CBR 1100 Black bird, with the jet kit on it.... As I sat at the light at the bottom of the hump, waiting for the light to turn green, Clairvoyantly, the entire accident played out in my mind. Yet, I dismissed it as what could happen rather than what was actually about to happen! As I revved the throttle, the thoughts dissipated. This bike was so beautiful, it was a magnet for attention! Flip - Flop Magenta Paint(Burgundy & Gold), Chromed out with Double stacked pipez that sounded like "mechanical muzik"! As I sat there, it was ALL EYEZ ON ME! So when it switched from Red to Green, I was suddenly just a memory. With the RPM gauge redlining, I kicked it into first, and the bike lept like the Jaguar I felt I was emulating! It was truly living up to the label of "CROTCHROCKET"! In less than 200ft., I'd already touched 105. After the braking, skidding, fishtailing, and bucking, I found myself "airborne"! As I smacked the concrete,Ibounced(according to eyewitnesses)aboutfive feet high, then hit the concrete again in a barrel roll for about thirty feet, then ended up sliding on my stomach, then finally on my back. Hoping not to hit the concrete median(although not in control of anything), I beared my back against the concrete to bring myself to a stop. When I did finally stop, all tolled I rolled and slid about 70 feet. The bike, as it flipped through the air went about 150 ft. down the street. As I layed there in the middle of the street, the traffic, which was all behind me, came to a halt. Completely shaken, I layed there for nearly ten minutes as friends and bystanders ran to my aid. When the reality set in that I was still alive, I was able to fi...Expand for more
rst sit up.Then another five minutes later, as the sirens approached, I was actually able to be helped to my feet. Needless to say, I was jacked up! I suffered dislocations of both shoulders and roadrash on both inner forearms, and to my legs, because I was dressed in shorts and muscle shirt. However, I was BLESSED to not sustain head injuries, as the helmet was strapped to the side of the bike. My friends and bystanders marveled at the fact that I survived, 'cause it certainly looked like curtains from their vantage point. So, just imagine my mindset, as I endured it!! Amazingly, my initial comment to them as I lay on my back was, "YO, DID I F#KK UP MY TATTZ?" But thats because they hold Spiritual symbolizm to me!!! (I APOLOGIZE TO MY KINFOLK MARVIN PIERCE, BECAUSE THE BIKE WAS HIS) After being checked out at the Emergency room, and subsequently released, I went home and wrote this Ghetto Poem not even two hours later. Its entitled "SHININ'2 HARD!" SHININ 2 HARD (On Tha Harding Strip) STUNTIN! For tha People I was tryin 2 Shine One more time, puttin my Life on tha line Jetted Out! Tha Ghetto Poet BLACK SOULJAH ENTERTAINMENMT September 2G College: To sum it up, S.U. is the Bombest Historically Black College University in the universe. After exiting the military, and steppin' onto Tha YARD, the contrast was great! Infinitely seeing nothing but Beautiful Black People, was awe inspiring, uplifting, and it set me on the road to "KNOWLEDGE OF SELF"! Although I straight "Kick'd It", I was blessed to elevate / educate my mind. Understanding who you are is needful, in order to have Self - Determination and fulfill your Life's purpose. To understand the History of Achievements and Sacrifices of Afrikans of America, which gave Life to this nation, is astounding! WE ARE TRUE HISTORY!!The Energy and Flava that exist amongst our Black Nation is Incredible! The Gifts given unto Us by Jah, our Creator, has uniquely set Us apart from the rest of the world! If We could harness the Spirit that Dwells on every Black campus, and ultimately parlay it into creating Black Unity, We could deliver Our People from the Genocide that plagues and has virtually annihilated Us! I'm thankful for the survival skills which were given me as a soldier. However, the Life skills given unto me by S.U., made me a SoulJah! Thus, this is my true philosophy in Life, that I am a BLACK man fighting for tha SOUL that JAH gave me! I just pray that the legacy that I leave once I'm no more, is that I made a difference in the Plight of Afrikans all across the world, to Rise!!! I say this, because it is only by JAH's Grace that I'm still alive to this day. I had a motorcycle wreck at the bottom of the hump on Harding Blvd. in front of Coleman's store. When my mother passed away in Feb. '00, I experienced chronic depression, became very wreckless and ultimately lost my will to live. In Sept. '00, that carelessness manifested itself when I flipped the bike doing 105mph! Those numbers were emblazoned into my brain, when I had to make a sudden stop as a car was crossing my path, and it was not possible to stop. As I locked the back brakes, the bike began to fishtale and it slid about 40 ft. I then barely tapped the front brakes. Mistake! Suddenly the bike began to buck. It dipped forward, came back up, then dipped again. Next thing I knew I experienced weightlessness as it threw me! When I smacked the concrete, eyewitnesses said I bounced about 5ft., came back down and went into a barrel roll, tumble, and slide on the concrete. I traveled approx. a total of 100ft.( from Coleman's to McDonald's). The bike slid even further. The helmet was still strapped to the bike. The injuries I sustained were dislocation of both my shoulders, and the opening of my skin on my forearms to the white and pink flesh. Yet, I sustained no injuries to my head. After lying on my back for about five minutes, I was able to rise up and walk away from it. Thus, I acknowledge that I am Blessed!!! So for anyone who would ever doubt Jah(God), I am living proof that He has ALL POWER!!!!!!! PEACE & BLESSINGZ MR. D.A.
