Darrell's Story
After graduating from Superior Senior High in 1966 I spent 3 years in the Army with a tour in Viet Nam. Three years in the Superior National Guard too. Attended UW - Superior graduating with a degree in Computer Science. Moved to Jacksonville Florida where I met the love of my life (Linda) but she passed away three years ago after 35 years of marriage. We had a daughter, Faith, which is my treasure. When I retired in 2015 from CSX Transportation headquartered in Jacksonville. Was my daughters desire for me to move up to their home in the north Georgia mountains. Took wife's mother who was living with me and I moved up this past summer after getting my home in shape to sell. I'm currently working on an existing detached two car garage that has an apartment above it and built a kitchen and small living room out of one of the car bays below. Recently connected the HVAC unit to heat & cool the kitchen & LR...My three oldest sisters live in the Atlanta area so it's like a continuous family reunion. I have three younger sisters still living in the Superior area.
After living in Florida and being somewhat separated from my sisters for almost 40 years I realized that family and a strong love for God was very important to me.
Since my wife passed away in 2012 I threw myself into my job at CSX and remodeling the house in Jacksonville first to move Linda's mother out of a nursing home( promising Linda I would take care of her mother) and then to sell it and move to Ball Ground GA. I'm still working on fixing on my bachelor pad(carriage house) here .Lost 50 pounds weighing in at 135 pounds in 6 weeks in 2023 but have since increased that ...Expand for more
to 150 which looks much better. I'm very active but keeping my weight under control.
I still have a problem listening to the love song You Were Always on My Mind by Elvis Presley.
I've always been shy and quiet but since letting God take control of my life he has brought me out of my shell. When I met my wife I had to get a Christian friend that knew her to introduce me to her because I was reluctant to walk up to her cold and start up a conversation. I don't have a problem talking to them it's just the initial contact I have a problem with. I tend to avoid eye to eye contact with women to keep from giving them the wrong impression.
I'm a person who can't get enough classic rock music to listen to. I normally dance to it and try to sing to the words even though I don't know them all. I'm currently painting my place and will dance to the music at the same time which can be a challenge but it makes a boring job more fun. My favorite group is or was the Bee Gees and my favorite song is Stayin' Alive.
My favorite music DVD is One Night Only performed by the Bee Gees in 1997 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with songs like Jive Talkin' in 1975, You Should Be Dancing in 1977, Night Fever in 1977, Grease in 1978, Tragedy in 1979, and of course Stayin' Alive in 1977.....
I'm a Deacon at my church doing building and grounds work.
