Darren's Story
Life
Hi, remember me? I'm Darren "Dirty Red" Silvers. I grew up in ol' Terre Haute, IN where I graduated from THN in 1996. I went to Vincennes and IVY Tech. It was after a very bad event (you know who you are - the anger still fuels me) that I joined the Army as a Cavalry Scout and left Terre Haute behind forever.
I spent 16 weeks in training at Fort Knox, KY. After graduation I shipped off to Schweinfurt, Germany as a new member of 1/4 Cavalry. Spent two perfect years here and when I left I was promoted to Specialist (E-4).
From there I returned to Fort Knox, KY where I became a trainer of new Cavalry Scouts and later was promoted to Corporal then Sergeant (E-5). When I was on leave I met and married the lovely Wendy Hood and we've been married ever since...no, no kids yet. I have enough as it is (my soldiers.)
Get this, after finishing my tour at Fort Knox I was sent back to Schweinfurt but this time I became an Infantry Scout in 1/26 Infantry (Blue Spaders). Been a lot of fun...Expand for more
here...well, until the nightmare of Iraq came...
In Samarra, Iraq I was responsible for my own truck (humvee) and crew (driver, gunner, dismount). Everyday I can honestly say was a goddamn streetfight. I would compare it with scenes from Blackhawk Down. I swear to God I have no idea how I came back...I shouldn't have. At least that's the feeling you get when you come back with less soldiers than you started with.
I love my wife, man. She takes care of me when I freak the hell out in the middle of the night due to crazy ass nightmares. I don't know how she handles me. I'm no longer who I was but something different...something more potent.
Sorry to disappoint but after 4 roadside bombs, a land mine, over 100 firefights in Samarra (Iraq), and closing out with an honest 9 kills for the year I am STILL alive.
Love your soldiers, people. We're not just numbers, or people with no dreams or future. We protect the idea of freedom with hardly ever getting to experience it for ourselves.
