Darren's Story

Well folks I'm still living and working in Reno! After High-school in 79 I went to UNR and University of Arizona for 1 semester. I graduated in 83 with an electrical engineering degree and worked for about 9 months at IMS International (Cubix) designing Hard drive controllers and switching power supplies. Then in early 1984 I quit and started a computer consulting firm (Sierra Computers), traveling to the middle east with my partner Lee James, who I had met at IMS. We designed english/arabic computers and traveled the world until 1986 or so. In 1987 I dissolved the partnership and became sole owner of the firm and changed the focus to Reno computer sales and support. About that same time (actually a year before) my brother-in law set me up on a blind date with Ellen Bowers, a Freedom Wisconsin native who was working on a pre-med degree at UNR. We've been married 23 years (give or take)this August 2009. Ellen is now a psychiatrist in Reno and we have 4 children: Meredith who is 19 as of this update (April of 2009) and just finishing up a semester at Shanghai University, Samantha who is 18 and about to graduate from Manogue High School, Jaclyn who is 16 and currently a Junior at TMCC High School, and Christopher who is 12 and just finishing 7th grade at Sagerige. We are lucky to have everyone in the family happy and healthy. Meredith is currently majoring in International Finance, Sam is planning to enter engineering at UNR, Jaclyn has hopes of entering medicine, and Chris currently likes the idea of being a comedian. local Network and computer sales firm and it is currently the 3rd largest such company in Northern Nevada. I also started a manufacturing company in 2003 called Highly Reliable Systems which makes tapeless backup products for computers (Our website is tapesucks.com). We are currently weathering the economic downturn at both companies, although it is a struggle. Our strategy at High-Rely is to sell to the federal govt since Obama is vomiting money right now. Speaking of which, I'm a Libertarian politically which generally means I'm a bit right of the republicans on most issues but left of them on others. Unlike most Libertarians I'm a staunch atheist and love to debate religious nuts (sorry). I'm also involved in the skeptic movement, and love seeing silly beliefs (such as therapeutic touch, homeopathic medicine, water witching, ghosts, esp, remote viewing, psychs etc) debunked and help to do so whenever I can. In fact, I'm a long standing contributor to the JREF million dollar prize, which offers $1 Mil for anyone who can prove they have such "powers" or "abilities" under properly randomized scientific control. See Jref.org for more. So if you are into "woo" contact me for some testing to prove it. Hey, it could be worth a cool Million. What else? I have a cabin on the shores of lake almanor, which I LOVE. I spend every weekend there that I can, subject to the kids busy schedules. I love boating and jet skiing, and tinkering in the yard, and messing with the dock and generally being in the beautiful environment. reach me? darren AT high-rely DOT com
