Darryl's Story

Life After JGHS 71-73 Got a baseball scholarship to the University of Detroit. Intended on becoming the next Catfish Hunter, until I ruptured a tendon in my pitching elbow, bye-bye baseball. Hung around majoring mostly in beer, girls and other things, however no degrees in those subjects. School wasn't really doin it for me, so I dropped out before they threw me out.Continued to take classes on and off over the next 15 years, even tried nursing school.Got an associates degree in Surgical Technology and began working the OR as a technician. Met a nice nursing student, Kathy and got married in the summer of 73. We lived on Grosse Ile, the marriage produced 3 kids, who are spread all over the country and are great kids. After 15 years, that marriage ended, another frame. 88-90--Met Kim, 12 years my junior, and fell hard. Married again in 89. Our relationship was fast and furious. I will always cherish the time we spent together, however, that marriage also ended, single again. 90-01--With everything in my life changing, I decided to change zip codes, moved to Ft.Lauderdale in Oct 90. Left the OR for a sweet gig in medical sales. Sampled everything south Fl had to offer, and the fresh start seemed to agree with me. I met my third and final wife Katie in 90. We were married in 95. I finally got the marriage thing right, she is truly my best friend, lover, and soul mate, sounds cliche, but it's true. We have been together for 27 years. . We spent our time working, traveling, enjoying South Florida. One night, after several cocktails, we talked about quitting our jobs and buying a bed and breakfast in NC. Since we would frequently stay at these places, we figured it wouldn't be to hard to run one. Our investigation into the business soon ended with disappointment. What we wanted proved to be somewhat pricey! Katie's work had a spot open in Nashville and the plan was to work for a couple of years and then buy the B&B. She took the job and was gone.I joined her 5 months later.Still waiting on the B&B idea. Careful what you wish for, talk is dangerous, it makes things happen. ...Expand for more
01-present The transition to Nashville wasn't easy. We didn't know anyone, had no family here, and that first winter, God the weather. I guess my blood was pretty thin from my years in the tropics, because I wanted to move back everyday. But like everything, we adjusted. Tennessee is now a nice place for me to be. The green rolling hills, the people are genuine and friendly, the winters are relatively short and mild, but spring and fall are spectacular. After a career in healthcare for both of us, we have retired. Katie in March of 2019, me in 2017. We travel, dine with friends, do all the usual stuff. So I guess that's it, 48 years, man what a blink, another frame!!! Glen Osborn is my oldest and best friend. I met Glen during my junior year at JGHS when I was 16, we have been friends for 43 years. We met during baseball tryouts and just seemed to hit it off. We really solidified our friendship during our senior year when baseball became our life. The summer after graduation I lived with Glen and his family, and to this day consider myself a part of their family. If you ask his family I'm sure they would agree. He was the best man at my wedding and I his. Although I moved away in 1990, we have remained close. I have returned to Westland 3 or 4 times over the years to visit with Ozz. You know, if's funny, but, there are times when we don't speak for months, but then a call will be placed by either me or him and we are right back in 71. We have shared many great times together, probably should have been arrested a few times, but I know he will always have my back and I his. I know if I needed something or was in trouble, he would be there. So Ozz, you're my best friend and I love you man. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Danny Clem, because I never got the chance to tell him how much I enjoyed his company and what an inspiration he was to me. Danny died at the age of 18, hit in the temple by a pitched ball during batting practice, doing what he loved most, playing baseball. I still miss him after 40 years, time doesn't heal all wounds.
