Darryl's Story

I'm Sherrill Yates Anderson writing for my husband Darryl. I'm very sad to tell you that Darryl passed away on January 21, 2013 from complications of a massive stroke he suffered in September, 2012. When he passed, he was not in pain and had been in a coma for nearly a week. He started experiencing seizures last summer and for that reason, we did not attend the 50th reunion although we would have loved to have been there. On September 4, 2012 (one day before he turned 68) he suffered a massive stroke at home on the right side of his brain; had I not been with him at the time, he would have died then. I retired in March 2012; he retired a year earlier. The stroke left him paralyzed on the left side of his body but he could still communicate by talking and thinking although his recovery was very, very slow. He even had to learn to swallow all over again. He was in a Salt Lake City hospital and rehab center from 9-4-12 until 10-18-12. I visited Darryl every day, all day. I put 40 miles on my car round trip daily. Finally he improved enough to go to a skilled nursing facility and was transferred to a Life Care Center in Bountiful, Utah where we have lived for the past 33 years. We moved to Utah in 1980 and have always loved Utah because of the 4 seasons we enjoy here. Yes, we even love the winters! Now my commute was only 5 minutes away. I visited him every day including Christmas. On Sunday, 01-13-13, he suffered...Expand for more
another stroke, I thought, but an MRI later confirmed it was a massive seizure and not a stroke. It was then I realized he had been having seizures all along from October 18th to January 13th. He was again transported back into Salt Lake City at the same hospital he was in before and lain in the ICU in a coma until Friday, January 18th when our family decided to take him off everything that was just keeping him alive. Our family was able to be with him until his passing 2 days later, at 1:30 a.m. on Monday 01-21-13. We were able to donate his eyes to research and had his funeral on Friday, January 25th in Bountiful. Darryl died 7 days short of our 46th wedding anniversary. The funeral was packed; he was very much loved by family, friends, co-workers, school friends, church members and neighbors. I thought you might like to know the details; whenever I have seen a name listed in the memorial section, I've always been curious to know what happened. Now you know about Darryl, too. Our 3 sons and their families all live near me and have been a great support, not to mention friends and neighbors. I've had my delayed breakdown - cried and cried - but now I'm doing so much better. I know that Darryl is in the loving arms of our Father in Heaven and this gives me peace. Thank you for taking the time to inquire about Darryl. If you would like to reply, please do so on my profile: Sherrill Yates, Class of 1962 Thanks!l
