Daryl's Story

Life As the old saying goes, "Some things never change." Of course, the flip side to that is that some things do. Things that haven't changed include my love for sports, both participating and watching. Now that I am middle aged, my participation is beginning to slow down a bit. OK, quite a bit. However, when I'm not traveling as part of my technical marketing job, I still make it to the basketball courts two or three times a week. Well, at least I'm still in good enough shape to watch as much sports as I can handle. My favorite football team has always been the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah baby - the Super bowl bound Dallas Cowboys. OK we'll see. My favorite basketball team used to be the Philadelphia 76 ers, then New York now the Dallas Mavericks. OK I love sports but I don't have time to watch that much. Life is busy, busy, busy. I try to make time for my other hobbies, including cooking, computer programming, digital photography, reading, audio and visuals (home theater building). Is cooking a hobby. For a bachelor it’s really a necessity, isn't it? Well, as you can see, I'm also somewhat of a techie. Well, some might say a geek, but if that's the case, I'm the coolest geek I know. I'm currently living in the Dallas, Texas area, where I have lived off and on since going to SMU for college. I acquired an electrical engineering degree and a host of friends in college. Right after college I began traveling for Rockwell International. Although my base was in the Dallas area, I traveled almost 90% of the time, living out of hotels. As you may have guessed that placed a strain on relationships. Well, at that time in my life I didn't think I should get married before the age of 30 anyway - and I didn't. Well I still haven't. I've been a life long bachelor...Expand for more
. Now, I must ask myself if I too stuck in my ways to ever get married. Hey, there is still time to find out. Upon finding out that I've never been married, most people will ask me if I ever wanted children. I will have to say that there have been times when I have wanted kids, particularly a boy or two. I have filled that void by spending time with a wealth of nieces and nephews. I've even had a couple of nephews live with me for a couple of years. Two different nephews on two different occasions. While I know it wasn't the same, it provided some of the same and additional challenges since they were both teen-age boys. I'm currently back in Dallas and hoping to stay in the area a while. I've been living with my girlfriend for almost three years now. She puts up with all of my travels and has even joined me on a number of International trips. In addition to traveling, we will go to the movies and theaters. We also exercise together by gardening, walking or riding bikes. OK, I wouldn’t call gardening and walking exercise, but she does, so I'm ok with it. Things have really become hectic at work. Particularly since my industry, telecommunications has eliminated hundreds of thousands of jobs. Those of us that are left have to do double and event triple duty. I think I stick with it a couple more years and then start a second career. I've really been eyeing a greeter position at Wal-Mart. I think I have the personality for it. Well, if you are one of my old friends, drop me a line. I have ha absolutely no desire to go to a reunion over the past couple of decades. But, recently I've heard from a couple of old friends and really enjoyed catching up. Therefore I'm sending a special shout out to those friends (Margaret, Maynard and Bruce). DC
