Daun's Story

So: what have I been up to since leaving Calumet? I graduated from Indiana University in '75. Moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where I taught science for a few years. Moved back to Indiana and taught in Crown Point for a few more years. Decided to make a career change and managed hospitals and health facilities for a while in the Bloomfield Hills area. The list goes on but ended up in Grand Rapids, Michigan where I worked for Grand Valley State University in administration. Changed careers again where I found a home in retail management. Now its time to retire so am prepping for a move to the great country of Panama where I purchased a home in the mountains a few years ago. Its about an hour and a half from Panama City and the canal and about a 40 minute drive to the Pacific and some great beaches. No wife, no kids, no ties to anyplace in particular so consider the world my play ground. I've traveled some and plan on doing a lot more of that. I've seen most of the Caribbean, Central America, a lot of the U.S., been to Canada, etc. North Africa ( Egypt, Israel, Turkey, etc., is on the bucket list as is anyplace in the Med.) Life has been good, along with some bad (loss of relatives) but can't think of much I'd change other than leaving Calumet Township a lot sooner than I did. I have to admit, Calumet was not a great place to grow through one's teen years but that's over so looking forward to whats in store with what is left in life. I am considering moving to Ecuador or maybe a med type of climate if I decide to not stay in Panama on a full time basis but can't imagine ever selling my casita there.( If you want to see what the area in Panama is like where the house is do a google search of "Altos del Maria, Panama". That will take you to multiple sites showing the area. ) Portugal or Spain sounds interesting. I've posted a number of pics in albums of Panama, family, friends, etc. so take a look if you would care to. One thing I've realized in life: There is a big world out there and its meant to be enjoyed and explored. I plan on doing both. Update as of 6-4-15: I am now officially a "retired person" so have the time to do some needed repairs on the house here in Michigan. After that its home and estate sale time, pack time and then a shipment of vehicles and personal/household items to Panama. No dates have been set and there won't be any-its do as I want, when I want and how I want with no deadlines......isn't that what retirement is supposed to be like? Hurray! (Update as of 8-24-15: I have now sold the car, 3 motorcycles and a few other antiques, etc., so am now down to 2 trucks and the Jeep Wrangler and one motorcycle. I'm finding it difficult to part with a lifetime collection of "toys" in preparation for my permanent move but have to do it. Slowly I am prepping to move permanently to Panama. Items I will take with me will have to fit into a 20' shipping container-anything larger will not fit on the mountainous and curvy roads in Altos del Maria). Update as of 10-18-15: I've had a new roof put on the house in Michigan with new windows and siding coming next week. A new fence was installed by myself and the next door neighbor today so repairs are moving along well. One more step to being out of here. Update as of 11-21-15: I have sent my fingerprints in to the FBI for a needed criminal background check for the Panamanian government. That is another step completed for my move to Panama..... Update as of 4-28-16. My FBI report and proof of financial responsibility has been sent to the Consulate of Panama in Washington, D.C. Once that paperwork arrives in Panama I will be going to Panama to finalize my pensionado visa for permanent residency there. Once that is done I can live wherever I prefer-Panama included and come and go as I please. (Update as of 5-23-16): Paperwork has arrived in Panama and I will be returning to Panama City ...Expand for more
on 6-26-16 to finalize that paperwork. Almost a legal resident of Panama now. There is light at the end of the tunnel...... Update as of July 4, 2016: I am now a legal resident of Panama. I completed paperwork there around the 4th of July. In January I pick up my cedula (country wide ID everyone carries) and then ship down my possessions....... 8-2-2017: University Movers (the local company here with Rainier Overseas of Seattle, Washington as the broker) were here yesterday to survey possessions to be moved out and shipped to Panama. I am now waiting for their price quote. The plan is to have the first load loaded and in transit by November 15, which is when I fly down for the winter (won't return til mid April, 2018) so I can accept my possessions and have them moved into the house there. Then it's return to the States, finish repairs here and decide if I sell or rent this place. After that it's one final move with ( I purchased a VW "Crossfox" in Panama last trip down for my "daily driver") tools (along with a few remaining household goods) and I'm finished. 15 years of planning, headaches and worry is about over with. I sure hope it's been worth the money and time...... New update: University Movers will be here to pack a 40' container with my household goods and my Jeep Wrangler November 6, 7 and 8. It'll take a month or longer to receive my household goods after shipment happens. I'm on my way..... .Another update: It is now November 11, 2017. I contracted with Rainier Overseas Movers of Washington State to broker my move to Panama. A 40' container is now on it's way to Panama. I will meet it to accept my household goods and Jeep Wrangler sometime this spring. One more container next year, sell the house and I'm finished with this move. Now: time to enjoy winter in the tropics. 6 April 2018: I have received my container full of furniture, tools and the Wrangler, have finished construction of a large deposito, carport and 2nd floor covered but open veranda and have everything organized. I now need to decide on how to add 2 more bedrooms and another bath to the house here in Panama and whether or not to sell the house in Michigan or hang on to it for a while yet. I will be flying back to the States in a day or two as my younger brother, Kevin passed away the day before yesterday (he had brain cancer for a number of years). He is now at peace. Update (6-2-18): It looks like I'll b returning to the Calumet Region towards the end of June to attend my brother's funeral, it will be on his birthday as things stand now. He will be interred in Calumet Park in Merrillville, next to my parents. I am not looking forward to that day...…… Another sign of old age has sprung up: I bought a Porsche to keep myself "busy" while in the States. If I like it enough I may ship it to Panama when I have sold the house in the States. For now it's Porsche time here and Jeep Wrangler time in Panama. Life is good. It's been a while so here it goes again: I've been in Panama now since mid October and I've loved every minute of it. I hate (in a way) to be returning to the States at the end of April-that means finish up projects on the house in Michigan and then list the place on the market. It'll sell quickly (most homes in Grand Rapids sell in just a few days). I still have a house full of stuff there so may move it to Georgetown, Texas until we sell the place there (my parents home while they were alive). After that I guess it's back to Panama to build the addition here. The house here in Panama has been painted-about 65 trees have been trimmed and pruned (dead wood, mistletoe removal, general thinning, etc.,) and the architect is now working on plans for 2 bedrooms and another bath. After that it'll be travel time (if now before...…. looks like Europe is a go for next year with my brother and his wife.) Later...…. Daun.

And the family expands yet again: Congratulations to the entire family!!! Tio Daun y Tio Jimmy son muy feliz hoy!!!
I find Bloomington, Indiana oftentimes on lists as one of the best small cities to live in, retire in and to visit. Every day it becomes a stronger candidate for a place to return to when I have to return to the U.S.
For all you Hoosier lovers out there: Is this poster from 1924 just the bomb or what........ (At one time I.U. produced more college presidents than any university in the country).

While in Coronado yesterday we had a ton of rain up around the house. The swimming hole shown here is a death trap when we have rains such as yesterday's. 4 inches of rain in a couple of hours is a lot of rain.
This is the first home I purchased in the North Park Neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan. 5 people were killed yesterday in the area due to storms and an F1 tornado. I feel for the people living in my old home today.
