Dave's Story

Life Married twice and divorced twice. My last wife and I have been split for about 2 years now, but are still good friends. I've got 3 kids and 5 grandkids. I play chess, draw pictures, read lots of books, ride motorcycles, goof off, work hard, laugh a lot, and occasionally do something worth while. I don't have as much energy as I use to, but then again, back in high school, all that excess energy use to get me into trouble. Some might say I've aged. Others may say that I've settled down. But I say I've just mellowed well. College After an 18 year long career in the motion picture industry, I returned to college. I had originally started college in the early 70's as an art major studying fine art and advertising design, but I dropped out when I had a chance to go to work in the film business. In the mid 90's, I returned to college and earned 2 bachelors degrees, one in finance and the other in information systems. Graduated with honors in both. For anybody that remembers me from high school or earlier, that should be a big surprise. The last math class I had in high school, I got a "D" in, and we thought that that was a big improvement. This time around, I was a popular algebra tutor. Will wonders ever cease. It seems that I never wanted to be in school when I was young, and now I would be a perpetual student if I could only afford the time. Workplace I've had a pretty enjoyable career life for the most part. I spent 18 years in the motion picture industry. My first 3 years were in non-union production jobs and I had a chance to work on the set of a number of films in various capacities. I've been a grip, a dolly grip, a best boy, a sound boom man...Expand for more
, a second assistant camera person, a production assistant, and an assistant props guy. I even did a little location scouting. After that, I moved into post-production and worked as an assistant editor feature film promotion (trailers or coming attractions). From there I became a first assistant film editor, a first assistant sound editor, and from time to time I was and editor or sound effects editor. You can see my face in Ron Howard's "Grand Theft Auto." I'm the guy behind the Real Don Steele when he get on the helicopter. You can hear my voice in "Days of Thunder." I say "Wrench is busted, get me another one" over the back of a guy that is changing a wheel during one of the big races. Also, if you can read fast enough, you can see my name roll by on the end credits of dozens of feature films. Back in the film business days we had a saying that went, "Why grow up when you can make movies." Now that I've finally been growing up, I'm trying to decide what I want to do for the remaining year. I was a financial planner for a while but didn't really like it. Mostly, those guys sell life insurance and who wants to buy something that they aren't going to be able to spend themselves. These days, I am working as an insurance adjuster for an auto insurance company in the Palm Springs Area, and thinking about what I'm going to do next. I've put together a business plan for an new advertising media and I'm working with some other folks to raise the capital needed to get that business started. Some of my friends tell me it's to big a project but I say that, just because its impossible doesn't mean I can't do it. After all, the fun is the living, not merely the existing.
