Dave's Story

October 24, 2013 Here's the digest version of my bio: After graduation from Westlake HS in 1974, I attended Texas A&M until December 1979. I did not graduate, having lost all but 3 hour of one semester to mono and then losing interest in my chosen major. When Jack-in-the Box enticed my first wife and me with the promise of quick advancement to managerial positions for both of us, we left College Station for Houston and a (not so)surprisingly frustrating tenure with that company. My marriage ended about the same time as the job with Jack and I moved on to a much more rewarding career as an air traffic control specialist at Houston Air Route Traffic Control Center (thats the facility that provides radar air traffic control over much of the southeast, from Ft. Stockton to Pensacola). I met my second wife at work and enjoyed both a great career with a mostly fantastic team of fellow controllers and a good second marriage. Unfortunately, my second wife, Betsy, was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2002. I retired in 2006 and moved back to Austin, partially to be with the woman who had become my love and to be near my family. In Austin, I returned to school to complete the BA that I had not finished years ago. I started that process at Austin Community College, both to get back into the habit of studying and to get caught up on the various requirements that had changed since the mid-70s. It was a great experience and helped prepare me for the upper level classes at Texas State where I went to complete my BA in History with a minor in Theatre Arts. I so enjoyed that experience that I am currently working on a Masters in History, also at Texas State. I should graduate in May 2014, having just one class and my comprehensive exam to complete...Expand for more
. In the romance department, the relationship that I moved to Austin to deepen turned out to be one that worked much better as a long-distance relationship. While we shared a number of beliefs and passions, we also had quite a few that conflicted with one another, and the tensions turned out to be too much to overcome. I returned to the world on online dating and met and dated a number of really interesting women (and a few rather scary ones) before finding my new wife. We had our first date on May 1, 2011, and married on May 12, 2013. While much of my "work" effort has been focused on schooling since I retired, I have also enjoyed the opportunity to work as a political organizer, hired by my union, twice in the last five years. I worked with the AFL-CIO in Denver in 2008 and Las Vegas in 2012, helping to mobilize union members during the presidential election cycles. It was a challenging, fun, and frustrating experience, but one that gave me the opportunity to meet many wonderful and dedicated people, mostly members of various unions, from across the country. Some of those people have become really good friends, including the guy who was the best man at my recent wedding. As to what the future holds, I am not completely sure. I am looking forward to a long and happy marriage to Kathy Raesz, including lots of travel and entertaining. My MA should be completed by next May, but I no longer have much of a desire to try to use that degree to teach as I originally intended. I anticipate that I will be doing political organizing through my union and the AFL-CIO again in 2014, though I have no idea in which state I might be sent to work. Beyond that, lots of bicycle riding and exploring. If you want to know more, drop me a note. Peace, Dave
