Dave's Story

Life Hi there! Well, I've had quite an adventure since graduating Howard S. Billings in 1975. For the first 2 years I worked off and on and collected pogie in between jobs. There was alot of partying going on. In 1977 I joined the Canadian Forces as a heavy equipment operator/trucker. I completed 11 weeks of bootcamp in Cornwallis, NS and then did my trades training in Bordon, ON. My first posting was to Gagetown, NB and in 1981 I was posted to the Canadian Airborne Regiment in Petawawa, ON as a paratrooper. In 1984 I was posted to Germany where in 1988 I met my wife Doris, a German National. Germany was great and the travelling was even better! In 1989 I volunteered for another tour with the Airborne and went back to Petawawa, ON. In April 1991 my daughter Melissa was born. Being in an operational unit there was alot of her early childhood that I wasn't around for. Such is life in the military. In 1992 I did a 6 month tour with the United Nations (UN) in Cambodia and in 1994 I did a 6 month tour with the UN in Bosnia. There were also training exercises and operations within Canada that I participated in during this period of time. In 1996 I was posted to Edmonton, AB and I have never left. I went on another tour in Bosnia with NATO in 2002 and after 27 years in the m...Expand for more
ilitary I decided to retire in August 2004. Since then I have enjoyed life being retired. My pension pays the bills and I do a bit of everything for my mad money. Doris was a stay at home Mom while Melissa was growing up but she joined the workforce 6 years ago and is now a manager at the local Walmart. My daughter Melissa is a parent's dream. She takes school very seriously and has been an honour student since grade 6. She's also very active in sports by participating in competitive soccer, volleyball, badminton, cheerleading and hip-hop dancing. She must have gotten all that from her Mom! I suppose that we'd be classed as the typical middle class family with a single detached home, a dog, 2 vehicles and a trailer parked at the lake. My favourite pastimes are golf in the summer, camping out at the lake, atving, fishing, and hunting during the month of November. During the winter I upgrade the house by doing renovations and I spend a bit of time on the computer daytrading stocks, ebaying, whatever. Once Melissa finishes university and leaves home, our future plans include buying an RV and heading wherever the wind blows us until it blows us back home again. Life has been a blast and hopefully it'll only get better! Drop me a line or two and let me know how you're doing.
