Dave's Story

If you're looking for a spellbinding, captivating biography....may I suggest a local library, lol. My parents moved from Park Layne Manor to Springfield the summer between my junior and senior years so I didn't get to graduate with all the friends with whom I attended school from 4th grade through my junior year. I don't think I realized it then but looking back I wish I could have finished at Tecumseh. I wasn't very involved in after school activities because I worked after school most days, even hitchhiked back and forth to Springfield every day to wash dishes at "Perkins Pancake House". Those were different days then and I certainly would not have allowed my kids to hitchhike that far, especially at night. After graduation I worked at the "Vogue Shop" in Springfield. Remember Percy H. Rosenfield, Jr.; your daily fashion reporter? In November 69 my best friend, Dave Doyle, was killed in Vietnam and in March I joined the Army and set out to Ft. Bragg for basic. From there I made several stops at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. for combat engineer training, Ft. Benning for paratrooper training and then back to Ft. Bragg for Special Forces Medical training. Also went to Ft. Sam Houston in Texas and then to Europe. I spent a year and a half in Germany and loved it. Visited Paris, Amsterdam, Innsbruck, the French Riviera, traveled throughout England. Dropped by Switzerland, Luxumberg, Italy and Monte Carlo. After getting out of the army I went back to Springfield for a couple weeks and decided to head for California in my new MG sports car. Spent several months, about 5-6, living on unemployment, sleeping in the car, yeah--the MG, and then decided I needed to get busy growing up. I went to a year of school in Springfield, Mo. at Evangel University and after my first year decided that Ca. was more to my liking. I decided on law enforcement as a career and started interviewing at different departments. I didn't have much luck until someone told me that if I were to finish and at least get an associate's degree I'd have better chances so I started a course of study at Cerritos Community College and Cal State Long Beach. It was good advice because once I had my degree in hand I was hired by the first agency with which I interviewed. I went on to get a Bachelor's Degree at Cal. State-Fullerton. While going to school I worked at a retail establishment in the automotive parts resale business. I got married in March 75 to Sherril Hunt. So I started work at West Covina PD in Sept. 76 and went to the academy, starting working in the patrol division in December. Talk about a fun job. I had a lot of experiences in that job, some good and some not so good; pretty bad as a matter of fact. In January 1978 I tried to pull a guy over for running a stop sign and he decided not to stop. After a short chase, he spun out on the wet road and came out firing. He killed one of my co-workers and myself and a third officer had to shoot him. He subsequently died. At some point I was promoted to Corporal and was a field training officer for several years. In January 86 I was involved in a second shooting and shot a man who had raped and assaulted his ex-wife. He had been holding her captive in a house and at one point she was able to get away and run out of the building. He followed her and tackled her on the ground. After ignoring orders to stop he put a gun to her head and I ...Expand for more
shot him. He survived and went to prison. While working I continued my education and obtained my BA. I retired from the police department about a year and a half after that and I moved north to a mountain community above LA. For those familiar with the area its called the "Grapevine". I lived there about 2 years doing construction work and also worked for the Forest Service as firefighter and back country motorcycle patrolling. After a while I decided I wanted to get back into some kind of investigative work and was hired as a claims adjuster for the State Compensation Insurance Fund of Ca. I did that for about a year and then decided I had something else in mind. I moved to Oregon in 1991 and started working for Oregon's State Fund as a claims adjuster. After a year I moved into a position with the company's Fraud and Investigations Division which is where I worked for 22 years. While I worked as a field investigator for a year, I've been doing strictly surveillance since 1993. I receive assignments and attempt to videotape the activities of injured workers to determine if they are as injured as they claim to be. I subsequently retired in July of 2013 and now enjoying the good life. Hiking, some backpacking, motorcycle riding and spending time with my family. Personal Events I was married in 1975 to a very beautiful woman and we have three kids together. A son born in 1979 who is a police detective sergeant in Woodburn, Oregon. He's a father of two beautiful girls. (Check out the pictures on my page). A daughter born in 1981 who is married two years ago and has her own hair salon/womens' boutique in downtown Salem. My third child was born in 1983 and is working here for the state of Oregon just a few miles from me. My daughter and her husband have provided a grandson born in February of 2014 and my younger son and his wife gave me my third granddaughter in July 2014. Being grandpa is way cool. Both boys served in the armed forces. The elder in the Army in Afghanistan and Kosovo and the younger in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia with the Air Force. Sherril and I divorced in 2005 after almost 31 years of marriage. Several years ago I got into genealogy and enjoy it immensely. My involvement however, goes in bits and spurts. I do very little during the summer because I want to be outside enjoying the sunshine which is absent most of the winter. I love riding my 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle and enjoy spending time with my grandchildren. The kids and I try to spend at least a week every summer boating at Lake Shasta Ca. I have a 21 ft. ski boat which doesn't get used near as often as I'd like to use it. I started backpacking a few years back and hike the forests here in the Cascade mountain range. I do have a "Facebook" page if anyone wants to check them out. Looking forward to the reunion next month and seeing some of my old friends. In the past 45 years the only one I've met has been Sue Wendling who lives not too far north of me. Well, now I continue the story. I was going to attend the 2009 reunion, had tickets and everything and a week before heading back my ex was killed in a plane crash. Really a shock and I needed to stay here with the kids to help them through. I ended up letting the Classmates subscription lapse and just got back on. I hope to hear from some of you. Love to keep in contact with anyone that wants to drop a line.
