Dave's Story

I graduated with the January, 1966 glass. Almost half a century ago as I type these words. It's mostly been a great ride through life. I was married to an extraordinary woman; she had to be to put up with me. I'm now widowed. I have two great kids and two adorable grandkids. Everything else good that's happened, I realize, has been icing on the cake. I'm physically active. I can still ride my bike 100 miles in a day, which I do a few times each year. While I weigh more than I did when I was at Uni, the bike jersey I raced with in 1976 still fits. And I still enjoy, every year or so, a hike or climb or a bike ride to the top of a a mountain. Once in a while I bike past Uni, too. My two adorable dogs get three walks a day, which means I must work from home in mid-town L.A. At least that's where my home office is located. My field locations include a chunk of the American West, where I conduct photography tours, as I've done since 1983. I like serving as a mentor to photographers. I hope I have more years left in that capacity. I've also authored four books, for which I also supplied the photos. My latest is about nature photography. I hope I have a few more books left in me. my years at Uni were my favorite. I didn't enjoy most of the school work and I didn't understand why I needed to study. Of course, that was foolish of me. I enjoyed being with my friends, with my girlfriend, I enjoyed a few classes with some great teachers, and I loved being on the track team. In fact, in late 2015 I managed to reconnect with Coach Dick Kampmann, after last having seen him 35 years before. If I didn't like studying in high school, I got over that in college. I have a degree from prestigious Chico State, in Northern California, and a degree in journalism from UCLA. I discovered that I enjoyed studying, and I enjoyed college life, too. I didn't enjoy my one semester in law school so I dropped out. That might've been a mistake, but I wouldn't trade what happened afterwards in my life for anything. If there had to be some deep lows to endure in life, they were of my own making, I've had some almost unbelievable highs, too, that seemed to arrive providentially. That half-century graduation is far behind me. The time ahead won't be as nearly long. The passing of time seems to run ever faster, making the time I have left ever more precious. Now it's time to go for a bike ride.
