David's Story

Life Hello and Aloha! Ihave beenliving a wonderful life with my partner Glenn. We have been togethor for 30years (I bet no one knew I was gay in High School as I was very closeted and it was not intheleast bit safe to "come out" at that time...and P.S. if any of my classmates sunk to the level of being fundamentalists and wish to leave me derogatory notes, don't bother!). Moving on...We lived in a neat old farmhouse in Kirkland for 10 years (after the usual time in apartments), and after that we lived on a 42' yacht for 15 years and went out most weekends. We even used to (for 14 years) go up to Sucia Island in the northern San Juan Islands for Christmas: what a great time! I still scuba dive and snorkel and was thrilled when we went to Hawaii on our 25th anniversary and for the first time got to go snorkeling in warm and clear water! We decided shortly after to move there although we suspected we could not possible afford it. To our great pleasure we found that the big island of Hawaii had 3 acre lots for 16,000 to 32,000! We picked one out in Orchidland area (in Kea'au) and started designing and building it (ourselves!). We both became psychotherapists; Glenn did about 27 years ago and I have been practising for 34 years. I specialize in treating post traumatic stress syndrome, and also work with families and children and have a contract with DSHS as well as served on thegovernor appointed panel called Child Protective Services where we advise CPS on some of their more difficult cases. I did that for 9 years and dropped out when I learned that they were not evenattempting to put most suggestions into action...and that we were more or less a "rubber stamp" for their files...how utterly disappointing! we will move our private practises there; although Glenn is now also a licensed real estate agent in Hawaii, manages vacation properties, and teaches at Argosy University. (He is over there getting established and I will follow in the next few months.) If any of you wan...Expand for more
t to visit Hawaii they rent vacation homes at a lot lower rates than hotel costs and they come fully equipped as well (he and his business partner Susan can be reached at HawaiianHomesVacationRentals.com). We both love hiking, minimal climbing, and especially kayaking. In fact, the reason we moved to the boat is that we realized that we couldn't keep up our gardens because we were kayaking/camping every weekend. I developed a very serious genetic disorder called ankylosing spondilytis however and now have to moderate my workouts, hiking and kayaking...but still do all three as well as snorkel/scuba dive. I simply where braces on my hands, use hiking poles, and had to stop the 8 mile/alpine wilderness type hikes that we both loved so much...but you know, there ARE advantages to car camping and just doing day hikes without a heavy pack! This has been very hard todeal with due to extreme pain it causes as it damages my bones and nervous system; and I've had 7 sugeries in just afew years. I have had to be on methadone for the pain for the past few years but that really helps, alonf with self injected weekly (low dose) chemotherapy shots...and wow was that ever hard to push that first shot in one and a half inches into my thigh!!! Now its no big deal. I imagine that a lot of us '71 grads are struggling with some type of disability or other and my heart goes out to you all. I have received a lot of psychotherapy myself before this hit me though and feel that I cope with it really well. Idon't miss workouts, and still enjoy all the sports that I always have; and work 50-70 hours a week in my private practise in Bellevue (Eastside Family Counseling Services) as well as do some volunteer or pro bono work. I hope to offer some free/low cost services to families in Hawaii as part of my new practise there. I also love to read, be with our 3 cats, go on long walks, play keyboard (I don't play saxophone anymore), am teaching myself how to do oil paintings. I'ld love to hear from you!
