David's Story

Life Most may know I swam all through HS and a little in college. I won only a few races but still scored big points during the tough meets and helped FHS win the state title 1986 - 1989. My biggest accomplishments are probably the records that I made for the club in the 1650yd free, 800M free (it fell shortly after June 2003), and 1500M free (which won a bronze medal in the 1989 Empire State Games and lasted until 2002). When it came time to attend college, I chose Old Dominion University for its reputation in oceanography and marine sciences. I swam for 2 seasons but I had to leave due to conflicting schedules with class and work. To keep myself busy, I got joined the Student Senate and the Biological Honors Society, becoming president of the latter for my last three semesters. I got a BS in Biology in 1993. Then I took a job at the Virginia Marine Science Museum as an instructor. Part of my job was to operate the Mobile Marine Lab, which won an award for Environmental Excellence. A friend convinced me that teaching was a good job and that I was a good teacher. So I decided to get my teaching license and returned to ODU for a year to do so. Shortly after finishing the program, I was hired by New Hanover High School (near downtown Wilmington, NC) in August 1995. There were some bad times that year but I enjoyed teaching on a whole and working w/ the other staff. Unfortunately, the school cut two of its science teacher spots and I had to move on. The next year I went to teach at a rural high school about 40 miles west of Wilmington. The cons of both teaching jobs outweighed the pros of teaching, so in the spring, I turned in my resignation and I never looked back. To this day, I refuse to teach in the public school system. Deciding it was time to again try grad school, I took some grad classes at UNC-Wilmington while working a couple of part time jobs during the 1997-1998 year. For some reason, the school only took about 10-15 new grad students each year (while >1000 aplied) and I didn't make the cut. Then, in the summer of 1998 I got in touch with another FHS grad that moved out west to Seattle. She and her husband convinced me to try the west coast. When I returned from vacation, I gave my 2-weeks notice and packed up my stuff for a cross-country move. They had me help in their wedding photography business until I could get my own business running (Anderson Cleaning Company) which showed a healthy profit during my ownership. Eventually, I took a full-time day job at Western Wireless while I continued to run the cleaning company. A series of events in summer of 2001 allowed me to fullfill a life-long dream of traveling around the country. I put my stuff into storage, mapped out an itinerary and set out in October. For the next 8 months I drove 35,000 miles and visited 44 states. During the trip I was able to visit several old friends and all of my close relatives (which are scattered over 13 states and each time zone). When the fun was over, I decided to move to Northern Virginia to get work and be closer to family. I started work as a...Expand for more
security guard for Dulles International Airport where I encountered one of Jehovah's Witnesses. In an effort to learn the truth about God and the Bible, I began studyingwith the Witnesses and was baptized in May of 2004 as an ordained minister. My dad died of bladder cancer three weeks later. For the next 18 months I helped my mom sell her house and move to Pittsburgh, PA to be near Ed (older brother). Strange events led me to my current home of Morgantown, WV, where I help my fellow Jehovah's Witnesses in the preaching work. I've only been here since Sept 2005 but it feels more like home than any other place I've lived. At this time I have applied to serve in the Branch Office in New York but my prayers have been to help where I am needed most, which may actually be right here in WV. To pay bills I install floors & clean office buildings but for a living I am a full time minister. Workplace My job history has been all over the place. In HS i worked at McDonald's, which didn't give me enough $ so I also cut lawns. During college I worked at a rec center (lifeguard, facility supervisor). During the first two summer I worked at Kodak, making aspirin coating. After I graduated in 1993 I worked for a year as a minimum wage instructor for The Virginia Marine Science Museum. This job also involved maintaining the Mobile Marine Lab (28' long traveling aquarium). I was only able to save some $ by working OT & saving the per diem $. Eventually I decided to become a HS science teacher, which was dumb! That was the wrong field for me - too much stress, not enough $ (I made as much scrubbing toilets as I did in my 1st year teaching). Working 55+ hours each week for $20k/year did not fit my definition of a career. So i tried going back to school. I took some grad classes, worked for an office cleaning company & an office supply company (I sold static-control devices). When I realized grad school wasn't going to happen for me I moved out to Renton, WA (see Bio) to work for a wedding photographer. This only lasted a few months but I was taught how to run a business & started my own cleaning company. To get extra income I also worked in customer services for a cell phone company. This allowed me to make enough over the next 30 months to sell my business & travel (no income) for 6 months. For a few weeks I did work as a maid in Seattle waiting for snow to melt so I could continue exploring the country. When I finished my travels I started working as a Security guard at Dulles International Airport. It's not glamorous but it paid well (better than teaching, almost as much as customer services). I had to leave the security job when I moved to West Virginia (even w/ the high pay, the N Virginia area was too costly to afford). Now I am back to cleaning office buildings but only part-time. I also install floors (laminate, hard wood), again part-time. These jobs allow me to work as a full-time minister of Jehovah's Witnesses. The pay is zero but the benefits are great: less stress, better health, more real friends and an eventual retirement in Paradise.
