David's Story

Life Geez, what to say? I drifted after high school, not focusing on anything. I wound up working on the ski slopes of Keystone for a few years, and then spent time doing everything from waiter to sales manager, ranch hand to handyman, freelance writer to teen counselor. Lots of jobs, but nothing like a career. After I finished a few years on the road with a jazz and soul band, I wound up in California. I went to college, found an interest in writing, and began to earn my Bachelor's in English. Now I teach middle school in Rocklin, California, and I live in nearby Lincoln with my two cats, Aspen and Specs. I spend a few nights each month doing karaoke, I collect DVDs and CDs, I like to cook, and still try to write a bit each day. ...I guess that'll do, for now. School Oh boy... since everyone who reads this might remember stuff, this one's the hard one. Well, I was a poor student... I skipped class frequently, had excessive teenage angst, and had a lot of self-esteem issues. This was reinforced by the teachers, who let me slack off and didn't think anything of it (with a few exceptions). Many's the time that I wished I could go back and do it again, knowing what I know now. I would've been far more outgoing, not taken any crap from bullies, and would've been a far better student. I could've done so well in high school, but wasn't mature enough to take advantage of the situation. I really wish that I'd done better back in high school for the simple reason that I was capable of so much more than I did. Still, I'm doing fine now and I've stopped regretting my earlier behavior a long time ago. It would've been nice, but I won't dwell on it any more. Who was my biggest crush? It seems like as a hormonal teenager, I had a new crush every other month or so... some were more serious, some less. Some that I still think of from time to time are Stacee, Laura, Colleen, Carol, Dee Dee, Kris, Kim, Kerri, Clarissa, and Mariclare... there are several others too, but memories have become hazy over time. Some of them have become heroines in stories I've written, although the names have been ...Expand for more
changed to protect the ignorant (and to cover my ass!). Part of the reason I've become a teacher is because for the most part, my teachers at Wasson didn't go the extra mile. None of them ever reached out to me to help me understand the value of doing my schoolwork and excelling at my classes. It was my senior year before I even heard about how to apply for college, or even that you had to apply at all! -- I think I should have been informed long before then. A couple rare teachers broke the mold and made some impression on me (Chris White, Ron Jenkins, Mr. Alderton), but for the most part, the teachers were abysmal representatives of the breed. One reason I became a teacher is because I wanted kids to be more informed than I was, and I wanted them to know WHY learning is so important to their futures. And... I think it worked. Sorry to go on a rant; I guess I still have some issues there. College College wasn't all that exceptional. Aside from some memorable dates, a couple great friends, meeting the woman that I married and later divorced, some great music classes and one exceptional writing class, college was pretty static. As an English major, college was, for me, one huge research paper and an endless stream of essays and book reports. Of course, I started college later in life, having drifted through numerous jobs and music tours before I settled down to get my education. If I'd gone right out of high school, it might have been less serious or something. Workplace I already gave a brief synopsis of this in my "Life bio". For now, that'll do. Military Not really much to tell. I joined the US Navy while I was still in high school, and served in the reserves for several years. I really enjoyed the structure and discipline in my life for a while, but got tired of the utter ignorance in the military bureaucracy. I wanted to go active duty for a while, but lost interest when I wasn't granted the training slot that I wanted and applied for. My classmate, David Ramsey, joined the Reserves at the same time I did... I heard he went career, but that could've just been a rumor.

I'm stressed, I'm mentally exhausted, and I genuinely fear for the future of my country. Thank God I still have my looks, right? ROFL!
