David's Story

Can you believe it is almost 20 years since graduation? I can't believe I missed the 10 year reunion, but I'll be there for the 20 year. I think this classmates.com website is really great, but I find it annoying that most people (and up until now, myself included) don't have any bio information. So for those of you who are curious about what I've been up to since graduation here goes... Football: My UCLA football career started w/ a lot of promise, but was cut short by injury. I redshirted my freshman year and actually suited-up for the first game at the Rose Bowl. I spent the first three weeks of the season practicing with the 2nd string offense before they decided to redshirt me. I entered my 2nd season tied for the 2nd spot on the depth chart at right offensive tackle behind a senior. I was projected as a probable 2-year and possibly 3-year starter. Unfortunately I sustained a neck injury in the first week of the season and played intermittently throughout the year. After sitting out the last 3rd of the season and most of spring ball, I opted for a medical release at the beginning of my 3rd year. Academics: Due to football, I enrolled in the College of Letters & Sciences with an undeclared major. It wasn't until the fall quarter began in my freshman year that I learned I would have to wait two years to apply for admission into the School of Engineering. So for the first two years (while playing football) I took the prerequisite courses for Engineering with the hope that I'd be accepted later. Fortunately, I was able to maintain good enough grades and I was accepted into the Chemical Engineering Department for the fall quarter of my 3rd year. I graduated in 1993 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with an emphasis in Biochemical Engineering. Professional: As many of you might recall, 1993 was a bad year to be looking for a job. Out of my class of 50 Chemical Engineers, only 3 had jobs at graduation. I, unfortunately, was not one of them. In September of 1993, I was finally hired as a Field Engineer in Midland, Texas by a little known company named Schlumberger. As it turned out, Schlumberger is the largest Oilfield Service Company in the world with over 70,000 employees, operating ...Expand for more
in well over 100 countries. In September I'll have been working for Schlumberger for 15 years in various technical and managerial positions. Although I started in Midland, TX I've moved around quite a bit with positions in Edinburg, TX; Lafayette, LA; Victoria, TX; Dallas, TX; Vernal, UT and most recently, Houston, TX. We actually live in a suburb of Houston, called Katy and we¿ve been here almost five years with no intention of moving. Family: Aside from football and academics, one of the main reasons I chose UCLA was because of Sharon. I'm guessing that most people reading this have no idea who Sharon is, but that is because she attended Moorpark High School and was a year older than me. We actually started dating in December of 1985 and she truly is my first and only love. In any case, Sharon was attending UCSB during my senior year and my hope was that she would transfer to UCLA and we would get married. And that is exactly what happened! She transferred to UCLA in the fall of 1989, we were engaged that Christmas and we were married in June of 1990 (Scott Rafferty was my best man). Sharon earned two degrees at UCLA: B.A. in Sociology in 1991 and an M.S. in Education in 1992. Prior to relocating to Midland in 1993, she worked as an elementary school teacher in North Hollywood for 1-1/2 years. After we moved to Midland in 1993, she worked as an elementary school teacher for another 1-1/2 years until my son Christopher was born in October of 1995. Shortly after Chris' birth, we were transferred to Edinburg, TX. We were only in Edinburg for 15 months, followed by Lafayette, LA for 5 months. Our next home was in Victoria, TX, where 2 months after our arrival, our daughter Allison was born in February, 1998. After 2 years in Victoria we lived in Dallas for 2 years, followed by 2 years in Vernal, UT. After living in 6 locations in 10 years and my daughter poised to start kindergarten, we decided we were ready to settle down. So we requested a transfer to the oilfield capitol of the world, Houston, Texas. Sharon also decided to go back to teaching, and after two years in the classroom, she became an elementary school librarian. In addition to the kids, we have two pugs: Ginger & Abigail.
