David's Story

Well lets see, I am suppose to say who I am. I am the basicly the same person I was 37 years ago. Wow, how time flies when you are having fun!!!! I remember Valley and names like John Herder, Chris Nelson, Scott Nelson, Tom Slaight, Paul Green, J.P. Eckman, Bob Start, Chris Runis, John Jap, Rob Laughlin, Shellie Felt, Cindy Carter, and a bunch of other faces and some other names. I guess that is what the 37 years does, it blurrs the images and times we shared as the new ones are built upon them year by year. That doesn't make the old memories any less important than a daughters volleyball game or violin recital or a graduation from college (wow I remember that at Hastings, Bobby and J.P.) , or a new teaching job here and there. Speaking of teaching, I guess that is who I am and what I have become. I never feel that I am good enough for this profession, but it is something I have stumbled through since 79. Anyways, my road has gone like this; one year teaching history and government (9,10,11,12th grades) in Hastings , Nebraska; one year teaching history and government at Westside (scary and fun all rolled together); 4years at UNO getting a P.E. K-12 degree with an Elem. classroom degree(B.A.), (I originally graduated from Hasting College with a B.A. in History/Social Science/Educ.), moving on to Chicago Public School District where I taught 4 years of elem. and enjoyed living life to the fullest the cup will hold in and out of Wrigleyville watching the best team in organized sports, my lovable losers Da CUBS---- "Just wait till next year"!!!!!!!! Got married in Chicago, had a daughter, finished my M.A. in School Administration, and then went to K.C. and taught elem. (1st, 2nd,) for 4 years while my wife finished her Ph.d in Special Education. We had another daughter and life was fun, but we both decided that we wanted to live out west near the mountains (midwest scenery can get kinda boring sometimes). So we came to the conclusion that whoever got a teaching job first, that is w...Expand for more
here we were going to go. She interviewed in Denver, I interviewed in Seattle. She was hired the same day she interviewed! She kinda had an advantage over me. Here she is a sweet looking woman! Black woman! Special Education M.A. and Ph.d,, with a 4 point GPA.. I just couldn't compete with that so we were moving to Denver, no ifs ands or buts. I caved in! HA!HA! One week later we were in Denver and the Seattle District called me up and offered me a 3rd grade position. Too late guys, tough luck! You don't know what you missed out on! You should have hired me the day you interviewed me. That would have made life very interesting where to go! So I have been out here in Colorado since 96. Have lived in Golden ever since we moved out here. Have taught 5 years in Aurora, CO in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. 5 years in Jefferson County school dist. in 5th and 6th grades. I have been in the Brighton School district the past 6 years as a Literacy/Reading Specialist for Kinder. through 8th grades (at a charter school). Got divorced (like sooooo many of us), and have been in that position for the past 7 years. Am not looking, just seeing what will happen, as far as a woman goes in my life. One daughter grown (25), graduated from college and has a job (thank god!), and out of the house on her own. My younger daughter (16, a junior in high school, lives between my ex and myself half the week. Not the best for any of us, especially her, and I really wish I could change that for her. Especially when I think back when my parents had 4 kids and were married happily for 35 years, and how lucky we were to be in such a loving and caring environment. So, I wish you all the best and look forward to hearing from any of you, who remember who I was and am. Maybe will see some of you at a Westside 1975 Reunion in 2015 for the 40th year? It'll give me a reason to come back to Omaha and flash some momories. Haven't heard anything about such an event, too early right now, I guess. Take care, David Binder 1975
